For the installation, we had received a Westell 6100 DSL modem. Things worked fairly well for the most part, but flaky issues with Xbox LIVE in particular prompted me to investigate, and discover the modem had its own built-in NAT. Obviously, this would be great if it's just a single computer, but on a network using a router, a bit silly to say the least. Some help from the guys at the filesharing forum helped me out in sorting that bit of trouble.

What's surprising is I would have expected the phone quality to mirror the internet connection quality... in fact, the dsl has been more reliable than the phone. Sometimes the modem might flake out, but more oft than not, a power cycle fixes that.

Only thing I'm peeved is that we didn't know it was possible to have a 'naked' DSL service from Verizon here. However, to initiate that now would mean more than two weeks of outage, which is something I simply could not afford now (what, with school and all). The option's still fairly attractive considering that just about every call from the landline is a toll call here.

Tech support has been decent, and what few times they had to come out here, problems were usually fixed quickly.

Still though, paying $40/month + $40 for the landline doesn't make it the most cost-effective way of getting internet.

    westell 6100

just go into the settings 192.168.1.1
and change it over to bridge mode and you will turn off the nat.

    Re: westell 6100

Thanks, but I find that it's not that easy... there were many more steps involved from the FAQ entry from the thread I was asking about it. Seems with Verizon in particular, there's a bit more involved to the job, too (and you have to clone the MAC address the modem had on the router so you don't have to wait two hours for it to give you a new IP address).

    Misleading Prices...

Saying that the contract for your DSL is $80/month is very misleading. Since according to you it is $40 for the phone line and $40 for the DSL. Most people when doing reviews don't add the NON-Dsl costs into the price for the review but whatever. Also, your prices seem a bit high all around as I live in Vermont the state that gets no breaks from Verizon in prices or bundles and I get my DSL for $30/month and a bare bones phone line it like $18/month with all the taxes included. So why you seem to be paying $40/month for a phone line that I assume would be the cheapest one you can get since as you say you don't use it is beyond me. I looked online and it says that for Davenport, FL 3 Meg DSL service is $19.99 for the 1st 6 months and $29.99 thereafter. FIOS is $40/month for the 5 meg package. So where you are getting these prices for your review eludes me.

Also, if you are having problems with the Double NAT of your router and the DSL Modem do what NBIComputers said, put the DSL modem into bridge mode and do the PPPOE login with your router. I have never heard of having to clone the MAC address from the modem to the router I do not have to do that and I use Bridge mode. Perhaps you are thinking cable??

    Re: Misleading Prices...

There is no PPPoE here for the DSL modem. So you have to clone the MAC address of the modem in order to get an IP address.
