    Verizon-East, NH, Conway, ~900 line-feet from CO, dynamic + force-churned ~24 hours IP, Westell 6100 modem.

Ordered the 3000/768 service March 7th 2006 @29.95 first year contract, recently reverted to something more expensive but I don't know what because I cannot access Customer Service. Did not use their idiotic installation CD and I *strongly* recommend not to. Call the 24/7 Tech Support and have them talk you through the modem setup and minor networking config verifications. It's faster, cleaner, safer and will introduce you to your modem's control interface.

    ---- Network ----

Very consistently get 2650/680. I'm a heavy BitTorrent (BT) user and receive an IP out of what appears to be a dedicated pool of BT-specific addresses. Seldom see slowdowns though, occasionally see what looks like connection count throttling but only during the typical high network load times. For the first 4 months experienced frequent modem resets under BT use, a known problem with the Westell outdated (2 revisions, ~3 years) firmware version Verizon uses and has locked. After ~8 calls, the last 3 angry ones, I was promised an Actiontech gateway replacement free of charge but they never sent it. I have been told VZ-East no longer uses the Westell 6100 but don't know if, on request, they would swap mine out for their new standard model.

    ---- Customer Services ----

The main reason to avoid Verizon is their absolutely horrid access to humans for general account services (including billing). You can literally place 4 calls per day for 2-5 and fail to get through. When you do the agent may or may not have a pulse. Must, of course, suffer moronic labyrinth of comp-prompts and automated slow-talk account data only to be then told "sorry, we're too busy now. Call back later." It's difficult to overstate how shoddy their Customer Service is. Accessing Tech Support is average for the industry and waits are not too long.

    ---- Mail Services ----

The webmail interface actually loses your data if you attempt to send an email >2:00 minutes after your last page refresh. You cannot extend the time-out period. Webmail configs are both poor & unreliable with some folder management tools not working properly (eg: save a copy of sent mails) but never giving an error either. POP3 servers have more downtime that industry norm, I never used the SMTP server so can't speak to that.

    =-=-=-=-= Addendum =-=-=-=-=

On 2007.07.01 I relocated to a rural location ~20 miles away from previous home. Kept the Verizon account as I was assured everything from your current dsl would carry over undisturbed to a new VZ dial-up. Not.

-> 3 day delay in associating online services to the new telephone number

-> final dsl billing was wrong

-> took 7 times to fix a myriad of minor access & records corrections. (~3.5 hours of high blood pressure)

So nothing in the acct services area got any better during my subscription period. Still the worst in the industry.

I have the Verizon DSL 768/128. It didnt start on time and didnt get the first month free. I've had it for about 18 months. About 1 outage a month. Speed test show me 712/98, dont live that far from the service area either. If it works its a plus. The lease ip just expired and the tech couldnt even fix it. Than i was told there was and outage in the area. All in all you get what you pay for.
