    My Other Reviews·Verizon FIOS
I have had this service installed since November 1999. The service was installed by Verizon, this was before self-installation kits. They installed a dedicated jack for the service so no filters were necessary. The modem itself is a Fujitisu SpeedPort R14 DSL modem. It uses dynamic IP address via DHCP. (No PPPoE)

The service has been very reliable with only one real outage, and that was due to a failure of the power adapter to the modem. Verizon promptly sent a replacement with a minimum amount of hassle.

The service is 768K down and 128K up. This was great when it was installed but it seems slow compared to other offers such as a Comcast cable modem now.

I called Verizon to see about getting a faster service, they said they could upgrade my account to 1.5MB down (don't remember the upload speed) and it would be cheaper then what I am paying currently. But, it would require two weeks of downtime to process so I passed. They said this was due to the fact that currently my DSL service is provided by a third party for Verizon. They would have to put in a request for that service to be disabled, wait for confirmation that it has been disabled, and then put in a request for Verizon to install service. Thus the two weeks.

Verizon is beginning to install FIOS in my area and I will be switching to that once it is available.

    UPDATE 10/08/06:

The DSL modem quit working. When I called Verizon, they said that I would have to purchase a new DSL modem and they would not replace it for free. The original modem was supplied by Verizon at no charge and no monthly fee. After spending many days on the phone with them getting the run around, and not to mention being down, they finally shipped me a modem for no charge they said.

After receiving the modem, I was billed over $100 for the modem anyway. After another few days of telephone calls to higher-ups, I was finally credited for the modem. After receiving fairly good service from them for years, it was a really sour note to end on.

I have since switched to Verizon FiOS, and ironically I can't say enough good things about it. (See my review of Verizon FiOS for more information.)

    This is because...

This is probably because you are on a different type of circuit than G.DMT, which is what's used today.
