    I have nearly five years of experience with DSL from the original vendor, ATT/Worldnet to the purchaser of my lines by Verizon nearly three years ago.

    The initial period can be rough if the stuff does not work reliably as a self-install. Test, and test again from the tools section of this site and others. Complain, (always very nicely), and complain again.

    Eventually, over 3 months, Verizon replaced my inside wiring, did a true splitter at my NID, replaced both lines from my house to the pole, replaced the line from the pole to a switch at the top of the street (about 3 city-blocks), and replaced twice the modems at the DSLAM connection.

    Again, I complained nicely.

    Overall, if you are persistant, you will get a good service.

    Update: Because of the hurricanes, blackouts, etc. a whole lot of trees were removed and a lot of wiring was redone.

    When things calmed down, I did a speed test here, and it confirmated that I was getting nothing close to what I had pre-storm, and post-storm wiring changes.

    They had an installer out the next day, he confirmed a line problem. And spent the next two days with a crew to re-run the cable to make sure it was right. "A lot of shortcuts were done during that big storm," he told me. "But we have the time now to try and make it right . A lot of people whould be yelling at us, I appreciate you saying 'just make it right, when you can' so your ticket got boosted to the top of our pick list. You get tired getting yelled at.'
