Back when I was in London, Ontario, I signed up Bell Sympatico as soon as it's available in my area. Service was good. Support was good. Reliability is excellence. Price was competitive. I had no intention to leave Bell until 2003 when I had moved to Winnipeg.
I moved to Ottawa, Ontario in 2006. I had to call the second time to talk to a sales rep who knew what is a dry DSL. I did not sign up for any contract, and paid the full-price for the unlimited service. It took a few days to receive the modem, and it has been rock solid since than.
I'm not a heavy P2P user (seldom went over 60GB), but sometimes I do download missed episode of TV shows. It was okay before Bell decided to throttle. This is not the deal I signed up for. I signed up for unlimited service. 30kB/s is slower than the first generation DSL. This is fake unlimited. This is false advertising. The throttling also might affect some of the encrypted connections I used, but I didn't have the time and effort to track it down. I know for sure it wasn't my equipments' problem. Besides, I didn't get paid by Bell to diagnose their problems.
I don't blame Bell being greedy. For one, all businesses are here to make profit. As long as they can deliver what I want at an acceptable price, I could be a happy customer. But Bell took a step back, fell short of delivering what they advertised, just for the short term profit? I am not sheepish enough to keep being abuse. There are cheaper and better DSL providers. I will dump Bell soon. Even though Bell is throttling third party ISPs too, at least they don't deceive customers.
