After 6 years of Vonage, I pulled the plug. I tried VOIPo, and as you can see in my review, they bombed horribly, so I dug out my old AC-211 from SunRocket and took the opportunity to try my own Asterisk server and try out a couple of BYOD providers. I initially tried CallCentric and they are great for low cost DIDs but their termination rates were a bit high so I started shopping around, which is when I decided to try Future Nine. CC also charged for termination to 800 numbers so that was a negative.
Anyway, after I got my account set up, I had them up and running in about 20 minutes after I bought my first $10 of credit. Made a couple of test calls and configured my outbound routes on Asterisk for them. I must admit that the website is a bit confusing but once you get past that you'll be calling in no time.
Call quality has been great for them thus far. For US calls they sound as good as a POTS line. I've also made a couple of international calls using the white routes and they worked pretty good.
I've had no issues with downtime or reliability at all. The price is also unbeatable! 1 cent per minute anywhere in CONUS? Can't go wrong with that.
I don't use any special features as I choose to "roll my own" with my asterisk box.
There's no E911 available to the general public as yet. It's still in beta but that's fine since we have cellphones as a backup and my other provider CallCentric also supports E911. My advice would be never to depend on a single VoIP provider as your only way to call 911.
The CEO, Nitzan, is also a great person to deal with, and he frequents the forums so he's there to answer your questions about the service.
Highly recommended!
UPDATE 05/23/09 There are now a few changes such as higher rates for really rural rate centers, but that is understandable due to high reciprocal compensation charged to F9 (some view this as abuse of the system), as well as incentives to keep you locked into plans including a $15 "downgrade fee." I can understand the business aspect of it, so I am not complaining since I am remaining a PAYG customer. But that is something to take into account if you are considering a plan. Still rock solid and reliable though. I haven't heard of any outage that was more than a few minutes, and I certainly haven't noticed any.
Grey routes are basically buyer beware but I have tried them and they work OK. I have had a couple of false answers with the UK grey route but that appears to have been fixed.

| one cent per minute Interesting. 1 cent per minute, IMHO is a good and fair price for VOIP. I have Vonage, but may be switching, depending on how they handle my echo problem (on the Vonage side of the call), that has grown to about 15-25% of all calls.
I do like the various feaures that Vonage has (contact book, Vonage Talk, etc), and would miss those. | |
