    My Other Reviews·Cox HSI
UPDATE - 6/3/09 Reliability (5): It has been 3 months of trouble free use so far so it was time to add a reliability rating. I'm very pleased with the service so far, especially considering how much Vonage and ViaTalk sucked and they were way more money. Hopefully things will stay this way as ViaTalk started out well for me and then went into the crapper.

    ----

I primarily use my cell phone for phone service but don't like giving out my cell numbers to businesses as I don't want to risk an onslaught of telemarketing. Thus I just needed a dirt cheap home phone deal. VOIPo looked to be one of the cheapest so given their 30 day guarantee I signed up.

The website is just average. I've seen portals for Vonage, Viatalk and some others and they seem to have more features and are more polished. That said it does offer some basic features like forwarding, logs etc...everything I need to keep tabs on my service.

I didn't port a number so I just placed the order online. That went without a hitch and about a week or so later I received my Linksys ATA. Plugged in the ATA and no problem running it behind a wireless bridge (2x AEBS WDS) and NAT with Cox cable. Works like a champ.

Call quality seems fine in that no one has complained. There is no echoing, hissing, popping or apparent delays. I haven't had POTS in years and honestly don't remember how it sounded for comparison. However it would compare, this VoIP service is certainly more than tolerable.

Reliability; I've only had the service about a month and so far I haven't seen any outages. Every time I've used it my calls go through and all the incoming calls come in (according to logs online compared to the Caller ID on my phone). As it's only been a month I haven't picked a number rating yet especially considering that I've seen so many other VOIPO customers reporting reliability problems. After 6 months or so I'll give them a rating.

I haven't rated tech support because I haven't used them (yet).

Value is great. I bought the $99+$36 junk fee plan for an average of about $11.25/mo. That's pretty good for an unlimited calling US plan that includes typical VOIP features like voicemail, call waiting/forwarding, tele-marketer blocking, DnD etc. There was a $30 activation fee, but the ATA rental/lease was included and there was no charge for the shipping. Comparable plans from VOIP competitors were typically twice to three times what I'm paying. If the service works well I'll be very, very pleased especially considering a similar deal with POTS would probably be $60/mo.

    So far so good.
