After being sick of AT&T's customer service and especially their deteriorating data network that was delivering less than(sometimes far less) 56kbps @1200ms latency in my general area, I decided my laptop needed better. I must say that I am highly impressed, given the area I live in. The slowest I have seen with my new VZW mifi was around 512kbps down and almost as fast up, other than a small no-coverage area, since I got the thing almost a week ago(and have already traveled with it). Ping times were even more impressive, staying under 100 ms to east coast servers. My phone service is still with AT&T as my end of contract for that is near and the voice/text part of AT&T's service is satisfactory, anyways. Thus, I can't make an up-to-date comment on their voice service. It used to be you could hear them, but they can't hear you several years ago. I can say that my new sipgate VOIP line works flawlessly over the Verizon Wireless 3G network in this area and sounds 100x better than my cell, which speaks to the quality of the data connection(as VOIP is not tolerant of too much latency and jitter). I decided to up the ante and rig my laptop with a hands free mic and the usual car RF modulator. The network was able to hold a VOIP conversation at 10KB/sec each direction without a single complaint of the sound quality on either end. At the end of the day, switching to VZW for laptop data is one of the biggest favors I have done my laptop.

VZAccess Manager upgrades!

I would just like to point out that if you install a new version of VZ Access manager and it eats up quite a bit of your 5G allowance that they are willing to make an adjustment, but, you have to ask for it.
I will copy and paste the quote below, straight from my inbox.
Question:
Message Body: I connected to the internet @6:55pm 09/03/2010 and a window
popped up to install a new version of vz manager, it was 45MB !
I think I may have installed a new version last month.
Do I have to install every version?
Is the data deducted from my allowance?
Thanks.______

Answer:
Dear ________,

My name is Kelly W. and I am happy to research your data usage inquiry today. Yes, the VZ Access software will need to be updated from time to time. If you encounter overages because of this, we can make any adjustment up to the file size of the update. Since your plan includes 5,120 megabytes of usage, the 54 megabytes used should still give you plenty of data usage without going over your allowance. So far, in this current billing cycle, you have used about 1.9 gigabytes of usage. Each megabyte that you exceed the 5GB allowance, is billed at only 5 cents per megabyte.
For complete details, including how you can check your data usage on this plan, please visit the Verizon Wireless Website:
