(ratings match consensus)

In December I applied for Covad/Speakeasy DSL service, about mid January
Covad disqualified me because I was "too far from the central office",
actually the BA tech that came out to install the line said that it met
his specs but was a slightly high on the noise spec from Covad.

I made my first contact with Bell Atlantic when they called and asked if
I wanted to participate in the new Sapphyre software test to see if one
of my existing lines would qualify for InfoSpeed service, I was notified
that it qualified on March 15th. Two days after I signed up for this
new evaluation program, I received a white external Westell modem and a
bag of micro filters. I was scheduled for self installation and
received the green CD with a turn-on date of April 7th. On Saturday the
8th I installed the software and after a few minor hiccups was on the
air that evening. I am up and running at 500 to 530 kilobits/second
down and about 60 to 63 kilobits uplink.

I just successfully passed the basic SecureMe security review due to my NetGear Router/Firewall ($245 Egghead), although it was a NetGear tech support assisted replacement of the firmware inside the unit to get it to work on PPPoE. They were a great help in this change over. (Initially I installed the WinPoET software to log in and establish the connections, and then removed it to get the PPPoE running.)

I turn my system off when not in use, but have seen no problems with
slow speed or outages yet. Maybe that big black cloud over Bell Atlantic is starting to break up.
