I'm a using a 75 Mbps down, 35 Mbps up package, and I get those speed consistently from speed tests. Downloading CDN-served content from iTunes or Steam is blazing fast.
The router/modem they installed is not great, but I just turned off the wireless, plugged in my Airport Extreme, and it works great now.
Installation in late 2011 was complicated due to unforeseen issues with the ground on our power lines, but that really wasn't Verizon's fault. After the power company replaced the ground wire, Verizon came back the next day, and everything was up and functional.
I've used FiOS for about 8 months now, and it has only been down twice. Highly recommend it if it is available in your area.
