Ordered 5Mbps/2 FiOS package on Friday, 7/27. First month free. Months 2-7 -$10. $25 Target gift card. Still yet to see if they will get the billing right and come through with the gift card.
Our VZ DSL had gone to crap in the past week. We went from a consistent 1.5Mbps/384Kbps to about half (and high latency to boot). The noise margin dropped from 14.5dB to about 5dB seemingly overnight (not a storm either).
Contractor for VZ came to trench on Tuesday, 7/31. Took them about 2 1/2 hours. Haven't noticed any issues with the sprinkling system yet; looks like they did a good job. Verizon Hooked up and installed the (complete all-in-one) ONT inside the garage on Friday, 8/3; they were done in about the same time as it took the trenchers. They didn't really tell us anything about it and mostly kept to themselves. We already had a Cat5e installed to where we wanted the router. It went outside as we did not know they would install an all-in-one box on the inside. Had I have known, I could have made the wall outside much cleaner. I still have to get rid of some Cat5e stringing down the wall near the NID. It now goes outside and then back inside...
I wasn't aware that they would only hook up one of our POTS line into the ONT. We had the main line hooked in to the ONT and the other two (office and fax) left as is. I would have preferred the office hooked in to the ONT but I didn't know until after they left.
Used the tweak test on DSLR and am now getting 5133/1889 from testmy.net and 5062/1837 on here to SF, CA. First hop 4-5ms. Latency in Counter-Strike: Source is super-low; lower than our VZ DSL on fast path. First 100 servers or so are ranging from 7-15ms.
Took the ActionTec router out as soon as they installed and got it running. I put our Belkin Pre-N Wireless router with MIMO (MAC address from VZ router cloned) up high in its place where we ran the Cat5e to. Computers get a much more consistent signal strength with it. No slow speeds as is with the Verizon ActionTec router and wider range. Overall very pleased initially with the service.
