    31000/9500 FIOS > 2700/689 DSL

There's not much to say. The actiontec router they use is useless, it required rebooting once every two days. I tried restarting it, resetting it, nothing worked. So I setup my own gentoo linux router on a unipurpose piece of crap in my closet, and it works.

There's not much to say. I pay $55/month for a connection of that speed with low latency, no downtime so far, and no transfer limits, that was provisioned a good 4500 kbps over what I'm supposed to be getting.

They went to the wrong apartment initially and said I'd have to wait a week for them to come back. This was angering, not because I had no internet, but until FIOS was installed in the apartment I had no phone _jack_, much less phone service. My employer wasn't happy with this at the time. I didn't have a cellphone either.

Luckily I have an antenna, and they put FIOS signs up on people's lawns..

Their tech support is literally there 24/7.. if you need an IP released at 3:30 AM, they can do it. It's a short wait, and they actually have a clue what they're talking about.

Definately get it if you can.

    your speeds

Try speedtests that are outside your local metro area. The results may surprise you.

    Actiontec

Funny how people's experience with the Actiontec router vary all over the place. I am still using mine; in fact it's the first router I've ever had that does NOT have to be rebooted every so often. I upgraded the firmware early on to fix the TraceRoute problem and have had absolutely no complaints since.

You are right cause I have only had mine for a day and have hard reset twice and have to reboot after any and all changes. Going to try different firmware but the lack of documentation and support is a low point in an otherwise great fios experience.

How do you make the actiontec pingable? Been looking for docs on it... can't find it. Just curious about my ping times cuz now I can host xbox games (finally)

For the price of a small bag of groceries, I bought
a Linksys WRT54GL, added DD-WRT free firmware, and now
I have a router that never needs rebooting, acts as a Vpn server for OpenVPN, and has much better transfer rates on wifi at 20-40% signal than Actiontec did at 100%.
The Actiontec has been retired to its box for the duration, and love this Fios, never thought I'd be grateful to Verizon for anything.

    Re: Actiontec

I had some problems with the actiontec as well that required rebooting, however after upgrading to the lastest firmware, I haven't had any problems since then.
