I ordered 15M/2M level of service for the POTS/ bundle price of $44.95/mo. in April '05. I originally attempted to order online, and a rep called me back weeks later when it was available. A tech came out to survey my location on Friday, and returned the following Monday to place the 400 foot optical service drop. Thursday, 2 techs came to run the new CAT5e cable to my PC & connect the three phones lines to the telephones in my home. They fished the walls down from my attic to get my PC wired. Next, they installed the 4 port router, software & optimized the TCP/IP variables for max speed. Speed test results verified approx 15M downloads and 2m uploads - success! I asked if they would cut down my old telco AND CATV service drop cables, they were happy to do it - and disposed of all the cabling. Later, I disconnected the 4 port Dlink router and swapped to my original LinkSys 8 port. I had to call tech support as I was unable to obtain an IP. The call was answered quickly, but required a transfer to a second tech to help out. He got me the right settings for the Linky & an IP in less than 5 minutes.
ALL of this was FREE. A wireless 4 port router was available for additional cost when I ordered, apparently a wireless router is standard now.
Here it is December '07 - over 2-1/2 years since install. I'm just as happy today with my service as I was the day it was installed. Still NO outages, NO bandwidth caps, NO loss of speed up or down, just one happy customer with 5 PC's connected to the router. Not too long ago, Verizon had a FREE speed update for people in my area. I 'm not sure what the increase was for other tiers, but my 15/2 went to 20/5!
A nice plus is that now *any* problem I encounter with any service provided by Verizon is handled by their "Encore" group. POTS, LD, Data and soon Video are professionally handled and expedited by an Encore Tech. No more repeated story telling, etc. They manage to solve the problem in a fraction of the time it used to (hopefully, this will be the standard level of customer service for everyone soon). My need for service is nearly non-existant now. Fiber doesn't care if its in water and can't be shorted out to ground, etc. It's a much cleaner sounding line. I highly recommend FiOS service to anyone that can get it.
