Vonage originally replaced my second line which I occasionally used for business calling when my VPN enabled IP Phone (Avaya) or Softphone was unavailable due to DSL being down. (A very rare thing...) For awhile, we made nearly ALL outgoing calls on the Vonage line The quality was fine.
The only functional complaints I had were minor. Vonage does not transmit "Name" with CID for outgoing calls and the IP to analog gateway booted faster than my router after a power failure, requiring a manual restart of the Vonage device to get back online. (The device does verbally warn you that it is not in contact with the Vonage call servers in this case)
But in the end, I canceled the service after my contract period ran out. We make so few calls outside the local area that there really wasn't any cost savings. Our basic Verizon phone service by itself resulted in a lower monthly phone expense. And if the Verizon DSL network is down for some rare reason, I can just drive to Starbucks and work since my wireless phone rings simultaneously with my office number anywhere in the world.
