Update - 12/1/2006 - I will be shutting off my Vonage service. They raised their rate again and I'm over $30 a month now for them. Plus, I think call quality has gone down hill recently. That is a purely objective opinion as I have not tested my link or done any other troubleshooting to find out why the quality has gone down hill. People I talk to have begun complaining about the quality as well. I've switched to Packet8 and the call quality is much better. Look for a review about them soon from me.

    -----------------

I signed up for Vonage June 2004. The service has been excellent. There have been a couple of minor (to me) outages. The outages are annoying, but not much of a problem for an infrequent phone user. I currently have the "$24.95/mo Unlimited" plan. I am billed $27 and some change each month. Refer-a-friend is very cool. I've referred a couple of friends and each time I've scored 2 free months of service.

Vonage has enough calling features to make any teenager envious. Check your voicemail anywhere in the world through their web site. Forward your phone and other features can similarly be controlled from Vonage's web site.

7 digit dialing is very nice. Sometimes I try dialing 7 digits at work and the work phone system sqwaks at me.

It took about 30 minutes from unpacking the box to having dialtone throughout the house. Your mileage may vary depending on your skill set in working with phone wiring. I elected to move my disconnected Bell line to line two so I could make use of Bellsouth's "Quick Connect" allowing me to still dial 911 in an emergency on line 2 of my phone. I then back fed the entire house on line one with my Vonage Motorola Terminal Adapter.

If 911 is important to you (it's very unimportant to me), then you should not consider VoIP (ie Vonage) as a primary line. Keep your POTS line for 911 access. 911 here works. It is sent to the PSAP's "Bat Line". I've called a couple of times for minor reasons (neighbors being extremely loud, etc) and it's worked just fine. Keep in mind no location info is sent to 911. I am satisified with how 911 works. Educate yourself on the subject before diving into the world of VoIP.
