I was very skeptical about Voip, but read some good reviews on this site, so I decided to give it a try. I received my equipment about 6 days after ordering. For some reason, I received 2 voice terminals instead of 1(guess I have a spare now). The installation was very simple. I currently have the VT hooked up in front of my router, but may change that if I start to experience any quality issues. I did have to call tech support on a mionr issue, and my call was disconnected while on hold. I thought here is the downside to Vonage that I have been hearing about. However, a tech had picked my number off their caller id, and immediately called me back and answered my question. I was really impressed.
I ported my number from SBC, because I have Comcast HSI, and no longer have a need for a pots line. This is another area I was concerned about, however, it only took 14 calendar days from the day Vonage received my request until it was completed. I hooked up the VT so that I am able to use the existing wiring in my home. All of my phones and caller id work, even Tivo can call out after a little tinkering. Overall, I am very happy with my service, I have a lot more features at about half of the price I was paying for SBC service.
After 1 1/2 years, I'm still a very happy Vonage customer. The only negitive I can find is that when my Comcast HSI is down, so is my Vonage, but I knew that going in. I just never expected to have so many issues with connectivity with Comcast.
I'm also glad to see that they are starting to implement some new features at Vonage. Hopefully some new area codes will be added as well so I can get a second number to make it a local call for my family in Peoria.
Update 09/17/2007
Vonage has been rock solid for me. I am not a heavy user, but I have never experienced an outage or any voice quality issues. My original voice terminal bit the dust after 4 years, but thankfully Vonage had shipped me two of them when I first signed up. A call to tech support (where I actually spoke to an American) and the problem was resolved in about 15 minutes. The only complaint I have is that the fees have really started to add up.
