Still have Vonage years later. I moved once and just took my old number with me (Added some new ones when I moved). Started a small business and added some lines for that. Vonage has done some considerable work with upgrades over the last year and really improved.
If you need to call them for any reason it is extremely complex. Indian speaking dialects are too much to understand, and they really do not understand you. If it is not on the screen they are lost.
-------------------------------------- I have been using Vonage for several months at my work and a couple months at home. From the beginning I had problems with the Motorola equipment they sent me at home. Until recently the Motorola MTA would freeze all the time. Vonage upgraded my firmware and all looks good so far.
The Cisco equipment has always worked well at work. The equipment has been in place for 5 months and never been rebooted/never lost a dial tone.
Call quality is good. In many cases better than my pots line.
I get a toll free number. More than enough calling features. I get my voicemail messages via email so I can check them from anywhere.
I have faith in this company. They are growing well and continue to add cool stuff. I think they have the issues worked out with the Motorola gear so you should be in the clear.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update: I have had the service for a while now. I had a lot of problems over time and after replacing the device (Motorola) I am now happy with the reliability and the call quality.
I really like the 7 digit dialing now.
I REALLY hate there customer service and tech support. It is some of the worst I have ever seen. With hold times of 20 minutes or more, then they just hang up. If you do get someone (and in those cases it is right away, if you are holding for more than 2 minutes hang up) they are very un-experienced and very quick to say it is just your ISP and it cannot be fixed.
Bottom line, if you have to call there support switch services, and fast. Other than that it is great, as long as one of there people do not have to get involved.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Another update: November 27, 2004 4 weeks ago I sent an email to Vonage. I was having a little trouble with chopiness which went away.
I finally, 4 weeks later, got an email reply that says this...

| Vonage Has Poor Customer Service as Well as Poor Connection I signed up for Vonage after being told that my direct satellite service would work well. After the hook-up, half the calls wouldn't work. After more conversation with Vonage Tech support(20 minute wait), I found that my upload speed connection to satellite needs to be at least 90 kbs/second in order to make good connections.THANKS A LOT FOR ASKING THAT IN THE BEGINNING, VONAGE!!!!! Then to send it back, I had to be on hold for 30 more minutes, explain why it wouldn't work, and get charged a disconnection fee (though they say it is temporary). NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!! Finally, I was cut off after waiting for a supervisor, then made another call. Miraculously, a woman this time politely terminated the service without trying to charge me $42.79. DEPENDS ON WHO YOU TALK TO!!! | |

| Stiffed by Vonage Installed Vonage correctly march 27, 2007. Had dial tone, but no sound dialing. Spent half hour while tech made various configurations. Was transferred to an "Advanced Tech" and another half hour while other configurations were tested. Advised Vonage router defective and was advised new router would be sent. New router arrived and was installed correctly. Same problem. Was forced to tolerate complete repeat of alternate configurations ending with dial tone but no other sound. Again transferred to Advanced Technicion who put me on hold to read case file (11144959). Remained off lie until call was dropped. No effort to contact me via phone or email. Am now stuck with two systems at me expense. | |
