I switched to my local SBC DSL several years ago, because COMCAST was just getting too expensive for internet plus cable. I switched to DSL plus Dish Network satellite TV. I made the mistake of signing up with one of the door-to-door salespeople, so my DSL order actually got lost. Also, because of signing with the door-to-door person, I was unable to get the good bundling discount. SBC was able to fill my DSL order as planned, however.
There were some problems later on, with the line loosing internet connectivity. I forget whether this was before or after ATT took over. I purchased points at BBR and activated line monitoring, because tech support kept telling me there was no problem with my connection.
I monitored the line for a while and provided the info to tech support via email. And, within a week or so the problem stopped. Could be coincidence, could be they actually read my email and data.
Original order was for 1.5MB level. The monthly price was about $20 for 12 months. At the 12 month point, I upgraded to the next higher level, because the price for my level was going up and the next level up was available for the same price. My modem says 3008 kbps incoming and 512 kbps outgoing. The monthly price was $25 but recently (without notice) changed to $30 per month plus tax.
This is plenty for our needs. We don't stream videos or download videos. Occasionally (once a month) I buy mp3s and download them. My biggest bandwidth use is installing software updates, especially those from MS. I have a shockwave/gameblast membership. That is the only online gaming that we do, and it is as individuals not "tournament" online play.
Prior to the SBC DSL service becoming ATT/Yahoo, I had maybe 3 spams per month (yes, month). My SBC account is only used for family--it is not a public email. For the first 6 months after Yahoo became part of my service, I was getting 30-40 spams EVERY DAY. It has slowed down to an average of 10-15 per day, mostly caught by the spam filter. The online spam filter did catch the "CNN top ten" recently, so I don't have worry about my family accidentally infecting the home computers with that one.
When I upgraded to Pro, I received the 2-wire 1701 HG gateway (4 twisted pair ports plus wireless). I don't use the wireless. I'm not comfortable that I can secure it well enough.
I would consider a plan with caps, if the caps were based on a running monthly average or some other averaging method, AND if my average monthly cost were only $20-25 for what I currently have (3008 kbps in, 512 kbps out). I have no idea how much data I use each month. I keep intending to get one of those usage monitors and check--but have not done so as yet..
