I have been a subscriber for about 5 years now. Total downtime would add up to about 2 days. Performance has been as promised. I just renewed my 1.5-3/384 contract for a year. Download speed is just fine. Yeah, I can get it faster with cable, but considering there are chokepoints on the internet itself, the speed would hardly matter. Also, cable speed can vary depending on the traffic on the local node. 'Course, the cableco's and loyalists who choose to pay more would disagree, but consider this. I used to work at a company with 4 DS3s. We had all the redundancy we needed. After overhead, etc, I probably had close to 40 Mb/s at my desk. My home DSL at the time could download files from places I needed to go to at the same rate as my mega-speed connection at the office. Keep in mind the internet is a much more crowded place these days, thus you might see speed is not everything, where consistency of performance is.
Have a nice day.
P.S. Lately, I have been getting tech support here in the US when I call, so maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel that is not a train.
5-27-2008 update:
So how many years have I had this service? About 7 or 8 or something like that. Well recently I called ATT to pay the bill on one of my lines, and wouldn't you know it, the nice lady at the other end of the line started with her sales pitch. I have successfully fought off these efforts in the past, but she said she could save me some money. AAHAA!! I was stuck on the freeway, so she had a captive audience. Went round and round for a while and I signed up for a bundle to upgrade to U-Verse 6/1 plus unlimited long distance plus TV (which we agreed I would cancel after a month) for a few dollars less than what I was paying. A week later, the friendly ATT tech showed up at my door at the same time the DirecTV came (explains why I don't want ATTTV). We got everything working in short order after I had asked about how to setup VPN to my network. Oh, I had static DNS set on my computer, but had forgotten, so we had some trouble getting online. Once we saw that problem, all was well. 5.4 down/900 up. I'll buy that for a dollar. Funny thing, my speeds are now 3.7/900, so I'll have to call in and see whats up. Overall, no real complaints. I'll check back soon to update things.
