I have been using att dsl for several years now. I am finally getting the 1.5 meg down that I have been paying for all this time.
If I try to change my service I will be disconnected because I am "too far from the CO' to qualify for dsl. I got service when the qualifying distance was much greater than it is now.
I keep hearing that the equipment is here for upgrading/expanding the system, but it is not being installed. AT&T's local supervisors are not interested in upgrading anything unless they are forced.
I would gladly pay for elite service, but it does not seem as if it will ever be available.
I use att because it is the best of the three terrible options available here. Cable has an overloaded system with 1.5 meg down and a 10 gig cap per month. There is a wireless option but install cost is very high, and they do not like someone using it as an always on connection.
I will stay with AT&T as long as it works or until something better comes along, or I move.
I do get nationwide wireless hotspot access for just $1.99/month.
[Update]
Not much has changed except the price went up this past month. I am still getting the 1.5 I have been paying for since 2002. The local dsl tech keeps telling me an upgrade is just a few months away, but he has said that for two years now. :-( When/if they upgrade the speeds I will be moving to a higher tier.
Cable is still the same slow capped service it has been here for about 6 years and the wireless option requires too much up front. I spent upfront money for a satellite system once, I do not intend to do that again, it was slow.
