I moved from Milwaukee (AT&T DSL, 6MB/s) to Des Moines. I was considering Qwest service (7MB/s for $47 or 12MB/s for $57, without a local phone line) but decided to try Mediacom after hearing they have a $30 for 12 months promo for the 10Mb/s speed. I was worried at first because friends back in Milwaukee had Road Runner from TWC and always had slowdowns during peak hours. I live in a large apartment complex near downtown Des Moines, so I thought for sure I would be down to dialup speeds during primetime. But for $30 and free installation + equipment, I decided to give it a shot. I called the Direct Sales Rep" that my complex manager suggested. He was very friendly and worked with my schedule and agreed to do the install on a Saturday between 1 and 3PM. The tech came at 3 and installed my HDTV cable box and RCA DCM425 modem, after trying 2 surfboards and a SMC Networks modem. I connected the modem to a D-Link DI-524 router. Internet works well and has low pings. Doing some speedtests (I downloaded several linux ISOs over a period of days at different times) showed the speed to average 945KB/s, which is much higher than my previous AT&T service. Pings seem to be pretty low, in the 50ms-100ms range, but I have yet to play any games over the connection. The mediacom portal (mediacomtoday.com) is a little lackluster, although their free hosting service is nice. The webmail doesn't have ads.
