I was a Qwest DSL user from September of 2001 until two days ago. After numerous speed issues and frustrations with Qwest, we received a flier in the mail from Mediacom about a new VIP package with phone, internet, and cable TV for $99 a month for a year. I decided it would be a good opportunity. We already had Family Cable for TV and were paying $60 a month almost for that, plus almost $80 for telephone and internet from Qwest, so we're saving a decent amount of money for at least a year and getting more features than we had. The VIP package comes with a 10/1mbit advertised speed. I've done several speed tests and have gotten anywhere in the range of 3-8mbit down, and a steady 900kbit up, even during peak hours. This is considerably better than the 512kbit that my DSL was trained at for downstream. The monthly fee includes the cost of modem rental. If I keep the service beyond a year, I'll likely purchase a modem myself.
We placed our order on Saturday the 9th of February and they dispatched a tech to install the digital cable and cable internet on Monday morning. The tech arrived *early* and was very efficient. The cable modem is an Ambit model U10C018, although this is temporary until the cable phone service is installed on the 20th o f February. I'll be given a new modem then that supports the phone service at that install. The tech left no instructions on how to access the modem's configuration or status page, but Google yielded me that information so that I can check my signal levels and such. I had to make a brief call to tech support to set up the ISP supplied e-mail - I had declined to do so at installation but changed my mind after the tech had left.
Overall, I cannot complain much at all. I have better upstream, better downstream, and browsing is so fast I could cry. At this point, unless Qwest makes some major changes over the next year, in terms of either fixing my neighborhood's issue that kept telling me the only solution was to downgrade my speed, or adding new speed tiers to my neighborhood, I'll most likely be staying with Mediacom. A lot can happen in a year, but time will tell. One other bonus - Mediacom handled the cancellation of service with Qwest so that we didn't have to call and deal with that. I called anyway to confirm the details of the transition to make sure we wouldn't be without phone service and wouldn't be billed for a full month of phone and internet service after the cutoff and their customer service representative didn't seem to care much about losing our business and didn't try to convince us not to cancel.
