My fiance and I recently purchased a house and she wanted to go ahead and move in (we can't move in together due to family concerns). I didn't want her to go without phone, TV, and Internet, so I looked at the available options. Cox looked to be the best value for the money. Ordered their TV service, IP phone, and their lowest Internet package. I won't go into detail about the TV or IP phone service, but I will say that they were equally as affordable as the 768k Internet package.
The 768k Internet package is $9.99 for 12 months and will then go up to $16.99 per month. The service was activated 24 hours after I ordered and I had a Linksys cable modem already plugged in. I wasn't required to be at the house when the Internet service was enabled. The Linksys cable modem is connected to a Xincom router and I use a Linksys WAP54GX to provide wireless throughout the house. As soon as I noticed the cable modem was active, I turned my laptop on and was online.
So far, I have had no problems and the technician that came over and installed the IP phone was very friendly and answered all my questions honestly. I will say that the technician was supposed to be there at 2pm and he didn't arrive until 4pm. Not really that big of a deal since we were at the house all day anyway, but it might have been a problem if we were short on time. I have been very satisfied with the service and I personally think it's a great deal for the money.
UPDATE 2/12/08 : Just wanted to make a small note and say that Cox is still awesome. The service has never gone down (and if it has, we haven't noticed or been affected by it) and my calls to Cox to get pricing on their business options have been returned swiftly (in about 10 minutes). The representatives have been helpful and very nice. I'm still a very satisfied customer.
UPDATE 5/14/08 : Ordered the HSI 12/1 service yesterday. So far, I am more than satisfied. The 768k package did not have SpeedBoost enabled, so not only do we get the initial download boost (peaking at around 25mbit), but we are also getting speeds higher than advertised. After the SpeedBoost, the connection settles in at around 17mbit. Color me impressed!
UPDATE 9/6/08: About a month ago, my 12/1 service was upgraded to 15/3 with no increase in pricing or additional charges. My Internet speeds are great, but since the upgrade, we've been having some occasional problems with our Cox VoIP service. It doesn't happen everyday... in fact, it only happens once in a blue moon. When it does happen, calling into our number results in a "This number is no longer in service" message. It's usually not out for more than a couple of hours, so we just use our cell phones if we need to make a call.
UPDATE 9/12/08: Well two days ago, our phone service went out and didn't come back on. Called Cox and they said they would have a tech over the next morning at 10. Sure enough, he was here right at 10. Apparently the problem was due to a bad splitter. He replaced it and now our phone service is back up and it hasn't gone out since.
