Update [19.11.2007]: Moved to Vista since last update. My ratings are unchanged as the service is about the same here.
Update [07.05.2006]: Just updating to reflect 9/1 cost (forgot that last time) and changing my good/bad a bit to reflect my experience.
Update [02.12.2005]: I just got back from a few days of LANing with friends to find that *gasp* We have 9/1 here now! Ordered it right a way, a bit of a hiccup when my modem wanted to re-register with COX and I didn't have my account number, but another call to COX got it fixed right away. Increased two points in value for money to reflect the awesome speeds I see now. It's almost 11/1 on most speed tests! Yay COX!
Update [08.10.2005]: Well, my modem went bad. Tech support did a fairly good job in diagnosing that. I got a new one and all's well again. Dropped value for the money down another notch because Florida just got an upgrade and we didn't.
Update [23.08.2005]: Updated ratings to reflect the fact that cox has been reliable for a long while now, and that they're offering a free security suite.
Update [17.07.2005]: COX is great here within the last year. I just wish they'd upgrade our speeds to 5/2 and 15/2 like people over in Virginia/Rhode Island are getting for the same prices we pay for 4/.512 and 5/.768. San Diego is a pretty tech savvy market.
Update [16.08.2004]: This was actually fixed about two weeks-one month after posting this review, I just forgot to update this. COX's new speed increases [which were free] are awesome, and the premium package is actually affordable now. COX is a lot better when it's working. I just feel bad for the Middle America COX customers... they got zip on the last 3 speed upgrades...
---Old review, when problems started...---
We have had COX since we moved here (2000) and back then it was @HOME. When they transfered over to their own network, there were a few interruptions, nothing serious. The longest *single* interruption I can remember was for about 4 or 5 hours when they decided to replace the line going to my house. The speed was mad fast and great for games.
All that has changed now. I cant quite remember when this started, but it was this year when it did. All of my games will randomly drop, as well as the rest of the internet. The cable modem acts as if nothing has happened and stays connected, and the tech support told me as well that the modem hasnt been disconnected at all ever since the last maintenance... I called up tech support after a while because it wasnt fixed. The first guy sent out a tech who replaced the splitter on our roof (and didnt screw it back in where it belonged). The problem continued. I hook my computer straight to the modem, same problem. We buy a new modem and get it set up, same problem. I format my computer and install all new drivers and windows updates, same problem. I switch my network card, same problem. My dad buys a new cable for our roof which was too short but just long enough to have it go from our roof straight through the front door to the modem. SAME PROBLEM. By now my WC3 record looks like 65Wins and 421Losses and disconnects. I call again, they send out another tech, and he replaced the new cable my dad got, same problem. We replace the network cord from the modem to my computer, same problem. By now I am sure it is on their end. I call up *AGAIN* and guess what they are going to do? Send out another tech of course! Even though the previous tech I talked to said "If it happens again, then there isnt much a field tech will be able to do about it." Now I wait until Tuesday. If this guy replaces the cable from across the road to our house, the thing on the house where it is recieved, the cable that goes to our TV and back to the splitter, THEN THEY HAVE REPLACED EVERYTHING FROM THE POWER LINE ACROSS THE STREET ALL THE WAY TO MY COMPUTER! If they fix the issue I will be happy again and be able to play my games. Right now, it is annoying to play PristonTale (MMORPG) with my friend, drop from the game, come back, and "Server is full!"
Please pray for me that they will fix this...
