The good: the connection is very stable and the speed is also stable and close to the limit Rogers is advertising. Bear in mind this may not necessarily happen in all service areas. The service does offer anti-virus (by Norton) as well other other basic security tools, however, Bell Sympatico gives you a far fuller range of security tools at a comparable price. Not that you should rely on anti-virus supplied by your ISP, however for people who are not too tech savvy and just looking for basic security without paying anything extra to buy such programs, Rogers is a decent choice in that respect. The installation of the whole set up is very simple and each subscriber receives a kit that explains the service, troubleshooting, modem drivers on CD ROM as well as any cabling.

The bad: the bandwidth caps on some of the more powered tiers, notably Express and Extreme, is just too low. It's perfect for people who all they do is surf, use messenger, email, download some shows and music. However, for the more power users, the bandwidth cap will be reached very quickly. Rogers claim that these power users constitute only about 10% of its subscribers. Whether you choose to believe them or not is up to you, however, if you are a power user, you download Linux distributions, you download a lot of DVD copies, you download a lot of shows from the Internet, legit or not, by bit-torrent or Usenet or other p2p clients, you will reach these caps fairly quick and pay overage charges starting July '08.

Technical support is very basic and beyond the reboot modem and release/renew IP they're not of much help. In fact anything beyond these two points will result in a ticket being opened and escalated to second level tech support and the network engineering department. And here is where the waiting begins as they rarely provide any fixes quickly.

All in all decent price for what you get, Extreme is overpriced, but regardless what tier you subscribe to you should really fight them against the modem rental fees and reduce your bill by about $3 a month. If you are subscribing to other Rogers products you should explore the possibility of bundling services to save even more money but beware that you're locking yourself into a term contract and often the discounts are very minimal.

    What about throttling?

Your review didn't mention anything about Rogers' engaging in so-called traffic shaping practices, whereby they scupper any chance you may have of actually reaching the caps they imposed. In effect, they're not providing what they sold us.

    Re: What about throttling?

First, virtually everybody now knows about Rogers doing traffic shaping. Rogers publicly confirmed it only yesterday even though they've been doing it for years. So now everybody knows. Second, virtually all the alternative ISPs do the same thing now anyway. And even those who are still not doing it will be doing it at some point. It's not like you can run away from it.
