IF you live where there is no option for cable (which my nearest neighbor has), or DSL (1 mile down the road) or any other service except dial-up, then satellite is the only option. It has been good for downloading software updates, etc., but the lag is frustrating at times and depending on the time of day, the speed gets bogged down also. Basically I pay 3 or 4 times more for Hughes than DSL which would be WAY better. I look forward to the day when I can drop them, but going back to dial-up would be even more painful at the moment....
