I live out in the Boondocks of North Alabama. The phonelines here were so primitive I was forced to look for an alternative. Found out about satellite internet from Directv the former parent company of Hughes. The sticker shock of the $600 install may have been too much at first but it was worth it in the beginning. For my first year the service was bearable with daily download averages 500mb plus on the standard home plan with some throttling. Added another computer to my house and upgraded to the pro plan which allowed for faster downloads. My household was cruising along for a few months enjoying what was about the closest thing to a broadband experience one could have living in the boondocks. Then finally Hughes initiated a new FAP (fair access policy). This new policy was claimed to be part of a service improvement move. It wasn't downloading was severely throttled to a 375mb a day threshold on pro and near dialup thresholds for home 200mb. If you hit your limit you will be kicked down to sub dial up speeds for 24hours. If your looking for a real alternative to dial up don't look a Hughes. If you have good phone lines and can get a pretty stable 56k connection stick with it getting a second phone line would be allot cheaper.

Additional notes Hughes uses NAT and does packet shaping. P2P can be done on this service but you'll be very throttled. File transfers over instant messengers are also a problem. VPN and voice over IP is also a problem with this service.
