    EDIT June 17 08

Well, its another year, DSL is no closer than it was, so I am still with Hughesnet. I am now on the HN9000 modem and the Sat 3 satellite, has some problems like a lot of pages that you have to reload to get them to work, and a fair amount of red x's that you have to refresh to see the pics.

The installer of the HN9000 was very professional, came from Texas to Oklahoma to install it. Very happy with the install.

So far, my speeds are as advertised, only time will tell as the satellite gets more people on it. Sometimes browsing is very slow, I have to wonder if it is because they are "tweaing" the system still.

All in all, another year with Hughes and wishing I had high speed DSL at a fraction of the cost of satellite. Life goes on.

    EDIT June 17 07

DSL is getting closer and closer to me, am waiting with baited breath. Hughes is working, just not as well as it should be for what I am paying a month. I have the pro plus package which advertises 1500kbps down and 200kbps up. I very rarely break 1000 down 100 up, the uploads suffer especially, with me seein around 30 kbps uploads a lot.
Hughes recently changed their Fair Access Policy, now we can download much less a day even though they slightly increased our actual bucket that we can reach before going into a 24 hour punishment phase where dial up is better that what you are subjected to. They said this was supposed to weed out the internet hogs and make our speeds better, but I have seen no increase in speeds, just a decrease of avaliable download capability per day.

Am now on the HN7000S modem, works ok, surfs ok, just doesnt reach the speeds advertised. (I know, they dont actually promise internet connection at all, so should be happy with anything I get)

All in all, am not really happy, and the wife, who used to be a Hughes defender now spends a lot of time on the internet looking for possible ways to get DSL

    EDIT
    31 Dec 05

I am now using the DW7000 modem and it is a vast improvement over the DW6000. My uploads reach as high as 200kbps and downloads average 1000kbps. Ping times have improved and browsing seems snappier most of the time. All in all well worth upgrading to the new equipment.

    ..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Its been a year now, and I have upgraded to the DW6000 modem. All in all I am still happy with their service, there have been a few days when it has been a little stressful trying to surf the internet, but it still beats the heck out of the dial up I was on before.

    EDIT

I am one of the unhappy campers of the DW6000 world. Some users never have a problem but there are a small amount that for some reason have units that are plagued with slow speeds. Some blame it on overcrowding, others say grounding issues etc. I was a recent beta tester of the new DW7700 unit and it ran great and had fine speeds. I go back to my 6000 unit and am back to dowloads of as low as 200 kbps on a regular basis and uploads of 6-20kbps on a regular basis.

Am I happy with my DW6000? Not really, but it will have to do until I can afford to upgrade to something better.
I have to think that DW is trying to act like there are no people with problems with their 6000 units but I know for a fact that I am not the only one with this problem.
