  • Saint Peters,Saint Charles,MO
  • $135 per month
  • (24 month contract)
  • about 2 days
  • "I have TV, Internet and Telephone"
  • "I pay more than they advertised"
  • "TV and Internet service is good, but avoid the phone service if you don't really need it."

I was recently called and offered the $99.97 a month triple play package and was told it would be cheaper than the $115 a month I was already spending. By the time they added the $35 service visit fee, and the $14.96 a month for phone taxes, and the $10 a month HD Ultra View add on that they say I now must have.... well, I'm none to happy with Charter right now. I was billed $182.05 the first month after the upgrade, but called in and got a $35 credit on the service visit fee since it was suppose to be a free install. Now I'm told my current bill is $150.05 and my next 23 monthly bills will be $135.84, which is much higher than they lead me to believe it would be when I said yes to the bundle offer. Lesson learned I guess.

Now, as for the Charter contracted technician who came to my house to do the upgrade... he had nothing nice to say about the St Louis Charter technicians. He said they were poorly educated and clueless when it came to RF signal maintenance and that the Charter techs had simply turned up the RF power in my neighborhood to overcome the need for maintenance of their aging and dieing system. He said my new digital cable tv service would come and go and my internet speeds would be inconsistent until Charter fixes their wiring flaws and that he wasn't going to worry about it because he was being paid to do his job, not their job. Turns out he was right... I have channels that come and go all the time with this new tivo cable box and my internet for many months has sometimes stopped loading right in the middle of a page download, which I eventually learned to workaround by hitting the refresh after a few seconds. Good thing this smarter than your average Charter technician contractor came by and told me that page freezing wasn't normal. Now if I can just get Charter to pay that contractor to come out and fix my neighborhood right.... I might get to learn what good internet service looks like. Sad part is, I now have to tell my wife she was right all along There WAS something wrong with the internet. It wasn't just her computer. For those many hours she spent retrying her photo uploads to facebook, I'm sorry. I should have complained to Charter when she asked me to the first time.

As for the Charter phone service they just installed... I don't really need it. Haven't even plugged a phone into it yet. I was just told I had to let them install it, else I couldn't get the bundle discount. If I would have known that the taxes would jump from $4.88 a month to $19.84 a month due to phone taxes, I would have said NO to the triple play bundle.

Good luck

Anytime I see companies keep pushing something I get a bit suspicious, and bundling seems to be a pathway to high profitability. I'm also NOT a fan of contracts UNLESS the deal is just too good to pass up, which isn't often the case.

It is obvious that Charter in your case has not provided honored their part of the contract, they have not provided reliable service. I would call them ask to cancel because they are not living up to their terms of service. Do not get angry with the rep. Be firm and persistent, and insist that you be allowed out of the contract since they are unable to meet their obligations. I have a feeling you will get your way.
