***6/25/2007*** I completely cancelled Charter today. My girlfriend is letting me get DirecTV which will be installed next Tuesday and I've had AT&T DSL for a month now. It was a pleasure calling Charter to cancel and I got a laugh when I was asked "Why are you wishing to cancel?" 10 minutes later (not kidding) they offered to send a tech out... for the 4th time... to fix my issues. I told her again EXACTLY as I told the 25 other CSR's and the last 3 techs who came to my house how to fix the issue, but even she admitted that speaking to the Ft. Worth head-end is, for some reason, impossible. By the way, I missed my 28th Astros game today, even though it was on the guide. I was greeted again by a rainbow screen instead of my beloved Astros. Since it is just too hard to plug the right FSN feed into the right hole, I just went with my only other option for TV until AT&T U-Verse is available here.
Buh bye Charter!
***5/20/2007*** I got a bill from Charter yesterday... even though I've only had service for 2 weeks. The bill was for the first month plus install, totalling $139. There are 2 problems:
-I already paid the first month plus install via check to the install guy. -The bill is asking for $12 more than what I was told by the sales/sign-up guy as well as the 2 confirming calls the day before the install.
So I called Charter just to tell them that they can take that $12 and stick it up their ass.
AT&T called Thursday and said I qualify for 6000/768 DSL. I figure I'll go with them for a faster speed for $27/month LESS and get DirecTV for TV. How Charter gets away with charging $61.99/month for 5000/512 internet is beyond me (price after 3 month promotion ends).
I also had an outage of both internet and TV last Thursday. After that, there has been random pixelation on the HD channels. So much for reliability. ______________________________
I had Charter when I lived in Denton, hated it, and was dumb enough to get it again.
Internet: Solid speeds and few outages. I'm experiencing a lot of issues with VPN and P2P usage, but I can't get a straight answer on this because it is literally IMPOSSIBLE to speak with a local Charter rep. Trust me, I spent DAYS trying to talk to someone in Ft. Worth. All calls go to a national call center to CSR's with scripts. They are great at telling you to unplug your modem, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in... but anything above that will NOT get fixed... they won't even attempt to fix it (and I'm not kidding).
TV: Terrible. They use old Scientific Atlanta boxes with on-screen guides that look like my first 8-bit Nintendo. Everything in the guide is listed as "NEW" so you can't tell when something is a re-run and the DVR records everything, even when it's a repeat and you tell it NOT to record a repeat.
Charter Ft. Worth has been in a despute with our local ABC affiliate since January 2007 so there is no ABC-HD. I don't care which party is to blame, I'm 100% sure Charter is not even persuing it anymore rather than fight for their customers. I'm sure we'll wait until 2009 when all of it must be digital/HD.
Pricing is good... for the first 6 months. After that I expect my bill to be around $140/month for internet, TV, and HBO. Their Digital TV service is broken into at least 6 tiers, so to get the whole thing I'd have to pay about $25/month more.
I am amazed they are still in business but as soon as the new national HD networks come out (Charter will never pick those up in a timely manner), in conjunction with new AT&T UVerse in our area, I predict Charter will go down.
