Keller,Tarrant,TX $90 per month about 1 days "10/1mbs+VoIP for *less* than SBC's 5mbs+phone" "Came back with bad memories from previous subscription" "Charter now has to compete locally with FiOS -- good for us!"

I think folks, especially non-technical folks expect too much from broadband providers. As a degreed software engineer I know that we have all "come short of the glory of God". I think Charter is as good as any and better than many. I'm still working on FTTH though.
Update 8/2003 -- Charter is still about as good as it gets -- for now. Roadrunner is raising speeds to 3mbs so Charter is gonna start looking slow pretty soon. I'm still working on a fiber solution though. (I'm grandfathered in on the 1.5/.384 Gold package)
UPDATE 9/23/03 -- I dumped Charter when they quietly downgraded all granfathered accounts to 128kbs upload. Not only is 128kbs useless for my videoconferencing but the way Charter sneaked-in the downgrade -- hoping no one would notice -- and then claimed technical problems in restoring the upload speeds. Really shabby I must say.
I went with the SBC Expert Plus 1.5-6mbs/512kbs pkg. It costs more but it's way better than Charter ever was.
UPDATE 1/12/2007 -- I'M BACK! with Charter! Charter has finally beat SBC/AT&T with their 10/1mbs + VoIP phone package. SBC/AT&T's voice services gradually crept up to over $70/mo -- more than offsetting their cheap $30/mo 5mbs DSL service. With taxes and fees the SBC/AT&T bill was always around $130/mo!
Charter's 10mbs + VoIP phone intro price is just $90/mo, for 6 mo -- then it goes to around $114. It'll cost about the same as SBC's pkg. then, but I'll still have doubled my speeds to 10mbs.
I still have some "scars" about Charter. I left in a huff in '03 (above). I sure hope this works out. So-far-so-good.
