Well, I was finally hooked up at the end of September. Total wait time: 2 months, 2 weeks. Ridiculous. Fault is on Bell Atlantic, and Covad. One of these days, I'll actually send that letter (about 4 pages) I wrote to the FCC, BBB, and NY State PSC.
So now that I've had the service for almost 4 months, I can honestly say that the only thing that REALLY sucks is that initial ping time to Seattle. 180ms of guaranteed lag. Telnet/SSH sessions are horridly lagged, to the point of requiring some real skill at typing many keystrokes ahead. I'm good at that, but doing it ALL THE TIME is not cool.
It looks like there are some better deals in town (NYC) these days, although I doubt they have as good service as Speakeasy. Unfortunately, if this lag issue doesn't get corrected, that's exactly what I'm going to be doing. I'm paying $91 a month ($89 plus tax) for a 768/384 connection, and am not getting anywhere near that bandwidth on sites that I get plenty fast connections to from work. That, plus the fact that my route from work to home is about 3.5 miles on the streets of NY, but over 4500 miles on the streets of the Internet!
I've been told on three different occassions from Speakeasy that they are installing a "Redback" for the NY region. It's supposed to get rid of the lag problem, and presumably give really speedy access to sites on the East coast. Well, on each of these occassions, I was told that it was ready to go, should be done in a couple of weeks max. Once in October, again in November, and yet again late December. Here we are about 2/3 of the way through January, and guess what? No upgrade. I know I could be getting the bandwidth I'm paying for by going to an ISP that's local, and that's exactly what's going to happen Sept 30, 2000 if things don't shape up. It's a simple business decision, I've got nothing personal against Speakeasy. It's just not worth it to pay for service that I'm not getting.
