I've been a long-time Bellsouth/ATT DSL (IFITL) customer (around 9 years). Overall - I'd rate ATT/Bellsouth IFITL highly as well - my main problem with that particular service was with regards to the overall speed of the connection (1.5/256kb). At the time, this was a fantastic speed - however, over the years, it simply hasn't kept up with my demands for an ISP.
Enter 2009 - and Comcast's recent upgrades of their network to DOCSIS 3. After waiting well over 2 years of "promised" (via phone call to their reps - "it's coming") speed upgrades from Bellsouth/ATT - Comcast ran a special via TV local TV ads for 12 months of HSI (12/2) for $19.99 - no contract / no early termination, etc.
At this point - it was too good of an offer to pass up. I have several other friends that have Comcast for their provider - and, in discussing with them - it was a mixed bag (some love it - some hated it).
So - I called Comcast and ordered the special. They answered all of my questions during the initial call. In short, the installer called up and requested to come earlier than the allotted time (which was fine with me).
Overall - the installation went well. I did have existing cable in my home - however, I also have DirecTV installed for my TV's. After reviewing where everything was hooked up - he did explain clearly that he'd have to run a new cable line directly to the location where I'd need the internet service hooked up (my home office). Once he ran the new line, he provisioned the modem (I bought a SB6120 prior to the installation), and setup the connectivity, etc. My only complaints about the entire process are: a) the "required" software (which I promptly removed once the installer left) that comcast enforces that you install on one of your local PCs for the initial connection (no idea what they do in a household with only Macs) and b) more of a nit-pick - but the installer had muddy shoes on and we ended up with a house full of muddy footprints on our white carpet.
Comparatively speaking with regards to the ATT installers - I'd have to say that the ATT installers are more "professional" than the Comcast installers.
Now - on to the connection / speed. In short, I've been quite amazed at the difference in overall speed. I've signed up for the 12/2 tier - however, in any given speed tests - I average an overall 15/9 ( yes I'm aware that's with the Powerboost technology )
As for reliability - we'll see - however, I've had 100% uptime (except for a brief power outage) since the initial install over 2 months ago.
Overall - I'm impressed and extremely pleased - I've gotten a huge increase in overall speed for almost half the price I was originally paying for IFITL with ATT. Granted - it's a promo price that will change after a year - however, considering the overall speed increase (and overall impact to my productivity in NOT waiting for slow downloads with IFITL/DSL) - it's worth it...
