This is my second time around with Comcast. I had them back in 2000/2001, when the service was Comcast @Home (remember @home?!?) Back then, cable modems were pretty new, slow, and service was splotchy - but hey - you were lucky to get anything back then, right? I do remember their tech support and customer service was way below par back then, and billing was always a headache - so that stuck in my mind.
After I moved from Woodbridge, VA I went to Cox - and was quite happy with them and their 15/2 speed tier. Moving to Richmond in May of 08, I was worried I wouldn't find anything to compete. Luckily I found out Comcast offered 16/2 with Powerboost for about $70 a month. I was worried about going back to them considering all the troubles in the news, on DSLR, and elsewhere -- but the only other option was 2mbps Clearwire.. Thanks but no thanks, I already have a Sprint EVDO card that works when it feels like it.
To my surprise, the installer who handled my apartment complex was accomodating, knowledgeable, on-time, and quick. I had things installed in a snap - and speeds were great; getting 30mbps with powerboost and 16-18mbps sustained! Excellent! And this with the dinky rented RCA modem!
Someone did forget to enter a promo on my bill - and to my surprise again, when i called the next month, they credited me the month of the promo AND extended it an extra month.
I'm glad to say that while I'm leaving them now to go to my new house with FIOS, the past year with Comcast has been nothing but good, actually. The price has been reasonable, and I only had one or two service issues - which were quickly resolved..
(My modem fell back to the 12mbps tier at one point, and I was sure I'd get the line that 12mbps was still "good" and to be expected, yada yada, but no - right away the tech confirmed that the modem was in fact set with the wrong profile, and I was back to 16mbps immediately - he even called me back when the modem reset cut out my voip (my fault there!).
So, in short, if you're in Richmond and can't get Fios (my next review), give Comcast a try.
"They're not as bad as you might think."
I don't know how much of an endorsement that is, but I'm highly cynical of this stuff, and I'm happy.
Oh - by the way - to compete with FIOS, they recently just bumped their speeds to 20/5 in my area! We have both Comcast and FIOS available at our new house, and FIOS was able to beat Comcast's price point by about $10 a month, so I went with them (and I'm a bigger believer in FTTH, anyways).. But if FIOS wasn't there, I'd go with them in a second -- and if Verizon gives me any trouble, I'm happy knowing I can switch back.
If money were no object, I'd even sign up with Comcast as a backup.
