    My Other Reviews·Astound Broadband
My only other choice for broadband and TV is satellite at the moment. I signed up for Comcast on a promotion deal I got from an online salesman through their sales chat. Everything sounded great. $55/month without contract (month to month) for the Enhanced Cable TV and 8MBPS HSI and no modem or install fee!

First indication that something was not right was my speed after install... Getting around 4-5mbps speeds (obviously on the 6mbps plan). The installer wasn't any help with that. Said I had to take it up with billing.

Next indication something was definitely not right was my bill. $168?! Basically my nice promotion 'no longer existed' and there was nothing they could do about it since I did it over live chat... great... So my monthly was now $69/mo. + $99 install. I was able to prove in my live chat transcript where it showed they would waive my install. But they wouldn't budge on the promo price. I also finally got them to remove the modem fee after I explained I didn't order a modem and I was using my own.

TV has been great. But since I am a geek I spend about 30 minutes a week watching TV... The Internet is just very poor in my opinion. I don't like my connection fluctuating to 20mbps then down to 3mbps (their 'SpeedBoost' enhancement). It also CONSTANTLY has slowdowns and intermittent loss during peak hours (seems overloaded to me).

I only rated the pre-sales info as 5 because at that time, I was VERY pleased with my offer and what I was getting. Great price and exactly what I had wanted. I now understand why the previous tenants of my house had a satellite dish hooked up!

    UPDATE 07/29/08:

Finally canceled Comcast after moving to a new location where I can get something else. However this I thought was worth noting. As my roommate was taking over the home lease they did not want to drop the Comcast that was in my name. Comcast told me that they simply needed to call in to transfer the account to their name with my permission.

What happened instead was Comcast closes my current account and creates a bill for the NEXT month AND bills my roommate for THE EXACT SAME dates. They are trying to get me and my roommate to pay for the exact same service on 2 different invoices. I found this a ridiculous practice. Good riddance.

Also worth noting is that my initial $69/month bill rose to nearly $100/month after the 6 month "promotion" was up. They also somehow snuck a modem rental fee into the invoice that I had not noticed before which I was told over the phone to take it up with billing at a local Comcast outlet or mail in a letter to the billing department. Get with the 21st century. I buy your internet so I can pay my bills and take care of business on the Internet. I don't want to drive to your outlet or mail in a letter for something you made a mistake on that is easily justified over the phone.

    Previous TV/Internet

I forgot to mention that I had previously come from RCN. RCN in my old area (Redwood City, CA) was AWESOME. 10mbit downloads, 1200kB/s ALL the time. No SpeedBoost 'smoke n mirrors'. Just rockin 10mbit all the time, no slowdowns, able to purchase static IP, excellent reliability, and TV lineup much better than Comcast IMHO.

It was more expensive ($99/month promo for phone/TV/10mbit). But well worth every penny. Couldn't comment on their support though... as I never had to call them! Maybe I was too spoiled by RCN and this is why Comcast feels sub-par to me. RCN, PLEASE come to San Jose. You will make a killing

Wow sucks to be you ( in jest )

Dude never order by chat it is 100% crap.I dumped the tv part of comcast ( Bad idea for me sat sucks) when I did that my bill went up to $69.00 just for internet what the hell,
So I CALLED Bellsouth/ATT and ordered Dsl got the box and every thing up and running $29.99 a month. Then call Comcast and ask to talk retentions girl about leaving she tells me no we can do better after about 5 min she tells me how would $19.99 sound for 6 months I ask her and after 6 month she tell me just call back at that time and I will get it all over Cool Ill stay.Call bellsouth up to send the dsl box back and the girl tells me how fast dsl is ( I can only pull 3 megs ) I tell her comcast is faster and I am getting it for $19.99 she tells me well ILL give it(DSL) to you for $17.99 for a year sorry no deal. The short of it call them and say you are going to move from comcast unless they drop the your price. It has worked for me at least 4 times over the years.I did not think it would work this time but it did.

    Comcast service

Edger - You described my experience - except I didn't buy the cable TV. The doenload speed is all over the map - mostly down around 3Mbs. I bought 6 Mbs. Every once in a while I'll be able to download at 6 Mbs and occasionally there is a burst to 10 Mbs. I had to get the install cost removed from my bill as they originally promised. The cable burial was poor (some places they did not bury the cable - just strung it on my neighbors fence - how does that grab you - my neighbor is not happy and Comcast is totally unresponsive.
