My only other choice for broadband and TV is satellite at the moment. I signed up for Comcast on a promotion deal I got from an online salesman through their sales chat. Everything sounded great. $55/month without contract (month to month) for the Enhanced Cable TV and 8MBPS HSI and no modem or install fee!
First indication that something was not right was my speed after install... Getting around 4-5mbps speeds (obviously on the 6mbps plan). The installer wasn't any help with that. Said I had to take it up with billing.
Next indication something was definitely not right was my bill. $168?! Basically my nice promotion 'no longer existed' and there was nothing they could do about it since I did it over live chat... great... So my monthly was now $69/mo. + $99 install. I was able to prove in my live chat transcript where it showed they would waive my install. But they wouldn't budge on the promo price. I also finally got them to remove the modem fee after I explained I didn't order a modem and I was using my own.
TV has been great. But since I am a geek I spend about 30 minutes a week watching TV... The Internet is just very poor in my opinion. I don't like my connection fluctuating to 20mbps then down to 3mbps (their 'SpeedBoost' enhancement). It also CONSTANTLY has slowdowns and intermittent loss during peak hours (seems overloaded to me).
I only rated the pre-sales info as 5 because at that time, I was VERY pleased with my offer and what I was getting. Great price and exactly what I had wanted. I now understand why the previous tenants of my house had a satellite dish hooked up!
UPDATE 07/29/08:
Finally canceled Comcast after moving to a new location where I can get something else. However this I thought was worth noting. As my roommate was taking over the home lease they did not want to drop the Comcast that was in my name. Comcast told me that they simply needed to call in to transfer the account to their name with my permission.
What happened instead was Comcast closes my current account and creates a bill for the NEXT month AND bills my roommate for THE EXACT SAME dates. They are trying to get me and my roommate to pay for the exact same service on 2 different invoices. I found this a ridiculous practice. Good riddance.
Also worth noting is that my initial $69/month bill rose to nearly $100/month after the 6 month "promotion" was up. They also somehow snuck a modem rental fee into the invoice that I had not noticed before which I was told over the phone to take it up with billing at a local Comcast outlet or mail in a letter to the billing department. Get with the 21st century. I buy your internet so I can pay my bills and take care of business on the Internet. I don't want to drive to your outlet or mail in a letter for something you made a mistake on that is easily justified over the phone.
