My service is still very reliable with the same equipment mentioned end of 2005, Linksys BEFCMU10 V.4 modem and Linksys WRT54GS V.1 router. My caps were raised to 16700/2200 the night of 05-29-08 with no increase in price.

Verizon FiOS high speed internet service became available here 04-23-08 and the rumor is we'll also have their TV service by end of this year, so I do have a nice option should I become dissatisfied with Comcast.

    11-28-05

I replaced a Linksys V.2 BEFSR41 to get the previous speed upgrade, 6600/768. Comcast raised the caps for my area in September, now at 8800/768. I had to leave the old modem, RCA DCM235 behind to get the speed. Bought a Linksys BEFCMU10 Version 4. All is well. I don't recall any problems since the last review update.

    04-29-05

I upgraded to the gold tier (6600/768) end of last month, $10 more per month. No traffic shaping in my area, hence the speed is not as consistent as I would like. The upload is also not as high as I was hoping, 670-690. I'll give it some time, but am considering trying to swap my RCA DCM235 for a Motorola SB5100 or SB5120 to see if that will make a difference.

    10-28-04

Update only to say all is still well, my assessment hasn't changed.

This is an update on 05-29-04.

Cap is currently 3300/256 and I generally get that. I cannot rate pre sales info or install coordination as I was installed by @home, switched to attbi, which is now Comcast. I was provided the RCA235 modem by @home and am still using that. IP is dynamic, but rarely changes.

I have occasional problems connecting to the e-mail server, but they are generally resolved with the next try. No DNS problems thus far. Newsgroups are slow and retention poor, if that matters to you. I can generally get what I want by checking for updates a couple of times a day when I am interested in something, but I'm not a heavy newsgroup user generally, so it doesn't really matter to me.

In March 2003, I started getting a rough ride, intermittent slow speeds, packet loss, high pings, etc. Tried the power cycling drills several times with mixed results. I noticed SNR dropping significantly through the modem diagnostic page, finally disconnected when it reached 21.5 dB. Called tech support, but signal came back while I was signing in there. Gave Belinda my info and she scheduled a truck roll for two days later. Continued with intermittent problems until then.

On the afternoon of the truck roll, I was unable to leave work to be home for my appointment and didn't have the phone number with me to call. I arrived home after the appointment window and figured I would have trouble getting help, considering I missed that one.

That evening the tech called me at home, accepted my apology, said "it happens", very nice about it. He said, since he was at my home, he took a look outside, noticed some loose fittings, tightened those and wanted to know about my connection. It was fine and has been since, except for a couple of 5-10 minute outages. Both times I was up and running before I felt the need to call.

Thus far I am a satisfied customer.
