UPDATE AS OF 5/11/08:
Connection is still rock solid. Have upgraded to the 8 MB package and upload speed has increased to almost 2MB. Speeds are as advertised and/or better, thanks again to Powerboost.
Customer service is fairly good and I don't seem to have issues with them for the few times I do call.
I have no plans to use Comcast Digital phone service as I have been a Vonage customer for 4 years and feel I get more for the money with Vonage.
Overall, I can't complain about Comcast. ______________________________________________________________ UPDATE AS OF 5/21/07:
My Comcast service is still rock solid. Has never gone down (or at least, not while I was online).
Speeds are as advertised and/or better, thanks to Powerboost.
Customer service is also quite good (for the few times I call, mostly to ask questions, etc).
I have nothing bad to say about Comcast, except for maybe a plea to increase upload speeds a bit. I am on the 6/384profile.
Continue the stellar connection! _________________________________________________________________________ UPDATE AS OF 12/31/06:
The end of 2006 brought an excellent broadband connection via Comcast. Having been a short-lived Adelphia customer as stated below, I was officially transitioned to Comcast in November. Email transition finally took place early December (would have been sooner, but they had an unusual profile name ascribed to me and I never got an email until I called weeks after the transition).
Speeds are blazing: I average at least 8 Mb down to 10+ down on the 6/384 profile. Uploads are consistent at 360 thereabouts. I would prefer higher uploads, especially with VOIP, but for the moment it is working well.
I like the free Rhapsody radio service that comes with the subscription.
No major complaints or flaws. VERY smooth running, with Customer Service usually doing a good job; very few clunkers (although the St. Johns, Newfoundland Center is outstanding!).
Looking forward to 2007!
UPDATE AS OF 11/22/06:
It is great to be back with Comcast.
Having moved to VT, I am a re-newed Comcast subscriber now that Adelphia has been sold and converted to Comcast.
I was transitioned over to the new Comcast servers last week and am enjoying consistent 4-5+ down and 366 upload on a 4/356 profile. It appears I have not been converted to the 6Mb profile as of yet.
Moreover, my email has not been transitioned and am awaiting instructions for that.
I would appreciate a higher upload speed since I have VOIP with Vonage (and I do miss Green Mountain Access DSL for that caveat) and might consider the premium pkg. Will ponder.
However, I am getting great rates on a bundled package which includes Cable TV for the next 15 months since switiching from DirectTV.
UPDATE as of March 13, 2005;
My download speeds went to hell the past few weeks: I was averaging anywhere from 1.7 to 3.8 down with a MOTO 4200. Speeds were inconsistent, pages froze and downloading was erratic.
On a whim, I decided to buy a new MOTO 5100 [I will be needing an addtional modem for a backup system anyways].
VOILA! My speeds are now rock-solid and consistent at 4Mb down or better!
It seems that the inconsistencies began after the speed upgrade. I don't know why.
Perhaps my older purchased MOTO 4200 was showing signs of age (but it was only in use for slightly over a year -- otherwise, it sat for 18 months in a closet unused!) and indeed is having problems? I can still use that on a backup system, otherwise my primary system will enjoy the blazing fast MOTO 5100.
Coincidental or Comcast issue?
UPDATE as of Feb 20, 2005:
The 4/384 speed increase went well while I was on vacation last month: I came home, rebooted and found I was speedily surfing. However, download speeds have not remained constant this past week and have actually dropped to levels that were more appropriate to the old 3 down configuration. I don't know why but will continue to monitor.
I am glad the upload speeds have increased and have noticed Vonage is even better (not that I had major problems, but at least now I can surf and chat simultaneously without any drop-offs or "hiccups").
I don't know if I will upgrade to the new 6/786 plan for $10 more per month when my $19 6 month promo plan expires in April '05: the 4/384 "should" be enough..but I would prefer a higher upload speed....
Update as of Nov 27, 2004: It has been one month since my-reactivation of Comcast HSI. So far so good! Speeds have been consistently around 2800-2900 down, but upload speeds are across the board. Connection reliability has been great with not one outage. Nevertheless, the amount of SPAM is unbelievable. Since I also have VOIP, increased upload speeds would also be beneficial (my last DSL provider had upload speeds of 800!). I have considered the 4Mb upgrade, except that the upload speed offering still suffers a bit. I am not quite sure if it would then be worth the $10 extra per month. However, the 6 month $19.99 special is quite good in the long run. Perhaps when Comcast rolls out its VOIP offering next year, upload speeds will increase. Let's hope so!
Update as of Oct 25, 2004: I re-activated Comcast HSI after having been away from the United States for a year and a half. Guess what? Email accounts had been active and were never shut down, despite my having canceled service 1.5 years ago. However, I did maintain BASIC channel connection for TV, so that might explain for service continuation. Customer service, this time around, was friendly and efficient (Joyce from Voorhees office)!! She correctly identified my prior email accounts and merged them so as not to create a new account (and I got the 19.99/6 month promotion!). She activated my MAC address on my owned Motorola modem, and then then efficiently scheduled me for cable TV Digital box delivery a day after I move back to NJ!
I will report later on speeds and performance in more detail, once I am physically present and when I connect my new Vonage modem.
Update as of Feb 04: Speeds have been upgraded are almost back to @home days and I am loving it. Customer service has greatly improved. Downtimes are almost negligible. Now, about that pricing....
I got everything I wanted from Comcast. Good service on a dynamic IP and acceptable performance. Earlier email outages were a nuisance but most have disappeared and service is always quickly restored. Am mostly satisfied with Comcast. A friend of mine has DSL from Verizon and he has had problems since day one...and his connections are always slower than cable. Install process was quick, timely and easy. Customer service has greatly improved since the Comcast/@home transition. Upload has increased to 256K as of Feb 2003.
