Smooth sailing for quite a while. I don't like how streaming a movie can affect the ping time of other computers on my network but other than that, no major issues in a while.

More random outages all day long.

Well guess what? Its March 1st and I have had no upload for the past four days. Internet usage is impossible. Technician came by yesterday, replaced my modem as if it would fix the problem. Mmmnope. Still doesn't work. Dying for FIOS.

Almost no upload it's cutting in and out... download is halved... again. I'm not calling tech support this time, I'm slowly loading up the Verizon website instead. I used their television and internet at a friends house and was thoroughly impressed. Cablevision is too expensive for the service I'm getting, and the television box is an absolute sluggish obsolete joke.

Just got off the phone with OOL support after my internet speeds are once again being butchered by no upload. I explain the whole situation to this tech "TOM" and he acted incredibly unprofessional. All I asked was if they were working on something in the area because a recurrent issue has started up again.
He told me my signal was fine, things happen like work on lines, congestion etc. that it's probably MY equipment. Insisted that he needs to connect to my PC to look around my computer for issues. I told him there is no way he was going to connect to my PC. No tech has EVER asked to connect to my PC and there is no way this jaded CS representative filled with clueless wisecracks is going to touch my PC -- which runs in pristine condition. He said he needed a "screenshot" of my speed results. I can take screenshots and upload them to him, why must he take control of my PC? He didn't like my saying no.
He scoffed, insisted its a minor bump and I should just get over it and wait for it to be over. I explained how I used Ventrilo to demonstrate my upload was non-existent (Ping jumps from 30 to 2000+ when trying to transmit voice) and he sarcastically apologized that he doesn't have my precision tools. I tell him my 19kmbit (I usually get 30mbit) is more than enough for ANYONE but it's not actually 19kmbit its jumping around. He told me "Oh im sorry you have to have your ping perfectly in line every second" and I said no I dont, it's just unusable right now. I can't play online games and I can't talk in ventrilo because it chokes up the signal.
He didn't listen to a word I said, assumed it was all hot air and didn't bother to actually check my line. I insisted there is something wrong on their end all I wanted was a polite confirmation, and he asked if there was anything else I needed? I asked to talk to someone nicer. He said I sure can do that! Transferred me to a very nice woman WHO FOUND LEAKAGE! She also mentioned someone from my town called about the same exact thing. Case closed.
So we're dealing with this guy, Tom, who is clearly disgruntled potentially entering innocent customers computers doing who knows what?
I called back to complain but I'm betting it falls on deaf ears expecting I'm only complaining to get money taken off my bill or something. I'm furious right now, and tempted to lower my ratings even further and call to complain again.

OOL has great for the last few years with little to no problems. A few weeks ago I noticed I was no longer able to register an upload on just about any speedtest, followed by long random slowdowns where my modem would lose signal and try to re-sync for hours at a time (which means no phone). To make a long story short, after 3 service calls filled with changed modems/wires/splitters they called in the A-team and found the problem in my neighborhood which had something to do with the Boost service. Their phone techs and service techs were great, I know it's unrealistic but I just wish they would start any troubleshooting by looking at their own equipment before anything else. Five minutes on google brought me to a post on dslreports that explained my symptoms and that it was an issue with boost, as far as I know phone techs do not have the capability to confirm that kind of issue so I understand why it had to be escalated so high before anyone checked. All in all I'm happy it is fixed. #1 ISP in the US ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- March 19 2007
Today my opinion of Optimum Online has changed drastically, no longer a OOL fanboy. I was just exposed to the OOL guarantee of absolutely nothing, even with boost citing the fact that we can now make our own servers for 10 dollars more! Just as long as no one uses it, ever. They can CAP you whenever they want and do not need a reason for it, of course their reason would be that you're actually USING your connecting for something as small as an instant messaging program - yes as long as the program you are using is uploading any amount for a sustained amount of time they can CAP you.
I sound like an echo in the fields of unhappy OOL customers.. even I felt they were exaggerating a bit but its true.. you cannot use your connection or they will CAP you.
The company is garbage and I will be switching to Verizon as soon as I can
By the way I say CAP because OOL insists its throttle and I enjoy listening to them scramble to correct me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- January 4 2007
OOL in my area is still top notch, never had a serious problem with the service outside of mother nature since the first time I turned my modem on. Thinking about getting BOOST but I think I am going to pass unless I need it. Still, the capability of it being there for only 10 dollars more is a great option to have. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- November 19 2005
Still a crazy good ISP, should be increasing to 15/2 soon and it's all good ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- April 03 2004 Not much to say.. everything is still great.. no problems at all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- April 30th 2003 I went out to my local cablevision walk-in building after confirming on the web-site that it was available. (On purpose even though I knew they rarely update the site but i wanted to MAKE SURE it was available). I walked out with a SB4200 modem and a self install kit, went home.. hooked it up and bam it was on.
Did a few speed tests, I was getting around 7000 kbits down 950 kbits up, did a few tweaks and it was up to 9100 kbits down.. so incredibly fast I couldn't believe it.. (being a 56ker for so long)
I had the download speed and everything and couldn't be more happy.. but I had to check the pings! Logged into Counter strike (what did you expect?) and the local servers (NYC-2-3 hours from where I live) I ping 10-20 to, at par and even LOWER than people closer to that server ping to. and my highest is 80-90 to west coast servers. (won't even go into european servers =P )
There is really nothing bad to say about my experience with Optimum Online(the few months I have had it so far) the only time service is interrupted is when they do EAS system checks at 2-3 AM the speed is always fast and constant, ping times always stable and low I couldn't be more happy and grateful.
Keep up the good work Cablevision!
