    update 5/23/08

It's still fast, but speed and latency are inconsistent during the evening (which is probably due to overcrowding in my node). In the past year, I've noticed more downtime but these are isolated incidents.

With that being said, I am waiting for the FIOS rollout in my area.

    Update - 2/23/04

Well, everything is still working as intended.
    Still getting 10000/1000...
    Still getting uninterupted service...
    What more can I say?

    ---------------------------------------
    UPDATE 6/2 -
Well BBR kept bugging me to update so here it is. I'm going to start with the current issues right now:
    1) Capping users' upstream bandwidth - This was mainly done to stop people from abusing their bandwidth, mainly p2p users and hijacked PCs which had file servers on them unknown to their owners. Good idea in a sense, but very bad execution. They could have at least stated what is and isn't allowed but chose not to. Many users started to get capped for no apparent reason, which I believe is due to the lack of info given by OOL. To this day, they have not acknowledged any of this.
    2) Major ports being blocked - I was only slightly affected by this so my comments will be brief. Basically OOL started to block more of the common ports used by certain programs as well as ended the ability to use the "net" command in Windows. Not good but you can work around this.
    3) Downtime on mail and news servers - These servers are very unstable and go down quite often. News servers only have about a two day retention which is way below most ISP standards. Beware if you're plan on using their email for business purposes as they are prone to crap out on you.

    Now the good points:
    1) Still the same fast and reliable internet connection it was a year ago. My connection I believe was down once or twice the last year which is incredible. Speeds still are about 1.1 MB/sec downstream and 120 KB/sec upstream. Recently my downstream has dropped to about 700 KB/sec but they are still nothing to scoff at.

Overall, OOL is still a very solid ISP even despite the problems listed above. You will not find anything out there that will offer these kinds of speeds and reliability (connection-wise) for the price.

    ------------------------------------
Coming from a year of crappy service/support using Verizon DSL, switching to OOL was like night and day.

OOL's rates their speeds as 100x faster than 56k and in my experience, it exceeds it. On their FTP site, I get downloads of over 1MB/sec and close to T1 uploads (about 110-120KB/sec up).

Order process was fairly simple. You can either opt for a tech to come to your house or the self-install kit. Self-install kit included a splitter, 50ft cable wire, setup disks, manuals and modem (unfortunately, at the time i ordered OOL, you had to pay for the modem but i'm pretty sure they're free now). Once the modem was hooked up, all you need to do is follow the simple instructions in the CDROM and bang, you're now online.

OOL does not offer an static IP, but for the 1+ years i've been using it, my IP has not changed. So i guess you can consider it semi-static. =)

Overall, you will not be disappointed with OOL. Their email and news servers leave something to be desired but that is only a very small downside compared with the great package you're getting. Other than that, you will be very happy with OOL!
