My Other Reviews·WOW Internet and C..
HISTORY: I used to use Adelphia before they were replaced by Time Warner (Roadrunner) - thus some of the ratings above are indicated as 'neutral' as they do not apply. I never had any problems with Adelphia, but I wasn't exactly thrilled with their pricing to begin with. Since the switch to Time Warner, my bill has increased by $10/mo (to a whopping $117/month) which includes Premium High Speed Internet and 1 Digital Cable Box.

SPEEDS: My speeds and latency have been very good (albeit a little inconsistent) with Time Warner. The speed ranges between 4Mbps and 6Mbps Download, and between 356Kbps and 480Kbps Upload, with latency usually under 25ms.

RELIABILITY: However, there are occasional drops of service from Time Warner. From just the 'blip' where I lose Internet for a couple of minutes, to a complete black-out where I cannot access my Internet for over 24 hours. UPDATE: I have not had any Internet blips or black-outs for quite some time now, so I am updating this part of the score from a 3 to a 5.

PRICING: As stated earlier, I'm paying $117/month. If you guys tell me this is completely normal, then I'll change my review. But I feel like that's pretty high for "premium" Internet with a digital cable box. I checked the WOW website, and it looks like I can get 6Mbps Internet + Digital Value + Phone (which, I have no phone right now) for $100.00. Granted, there may be other fees (i.e. modem rentals, taxes, etc..) that will bring it to $117/month, but that includes phone service which I don't get with Time Warner, plus a DVR recorder.

CONCLUSION: I've been forced to switch from Adelphia to Time Warner. The Internet drops and high price are very disconcerting. I'm going to call WOW tomorrow and see what the total price would be to switch. If any of you can give advice on whether it's worth switching from Roadrunner to WOW, please let me know.

UPDATE: I tried WOW services, and their speeds are often nowhere close to advertised. Sometimes I got speeds as high as 5.5Mbps, but mostly it was near 2.5Mbps and sometimes fell below 1Mbps. The advertised speed was 6Mbps. Since this is not a WOW review, that's all I will say about that (but please read my WOW review!).

I called Time Warner and asked if they could reduce my bill at all. They reduced it by $23/month (it was going to be $123 per month with phone included) to just $100/month. This includes digital cable, premium Internet (6Mbps+ speed), and a phone. This doesn't include the DVR that WOW offered, but I will call Time Warner on another day to see what I can get that for.

Therefore, the "Value" part has been updated from a "1" to a "3".

    Believe it or not ...

That's actually about normal for just having Roadrunner and DTV with a DVR. I have Digital TV with 1 HD-DVR and one regular DTV box, Roadrunner Premium ( 10 mb Down / 768 kbps Up ) which some markets call RoadRunner Turbo, and Time Warner's Digital Phone and my bill is around $170 a month. Which considering what you get with the digital phone as far as features wise is still cheaper then having Digital Cable and internet/phone service from our local telco system. BTW, the Digital Cable price is a little higher only because i have HBO POD, and Cinemax POD. Hopes this make you feel a bit better.

    Bill sounds about right...

Prices vary by market, but what you're paying sounds about right. "Regular" pricing around here is $45/mo digital cable, $45/mo internet before equipment and taxes. DVR adds quite a bit of expense to the equipment category:

    $45 cable
    $45 internet
    +$10 "premium" internet
    +$5 digital cable box
    +$10 DVR service fee
    +$10 taxes/fees
-$5 "cable plus internet bundle discount"
    ------
    $120
