    My Other Reviews·Vonage

    Update: 1-31-2008
I recently moved and had Time Warner cable installed at my new apartment. They gave me the promo rates all over again: $29.95/mo for digital cable and $39.95/mo for Roadrunner extreme (10000/1000) Internet.
I also signed up for DSL Extreme DSL-and ran smack dab into one of the biggest problems that DSL has-inconsistency. There are two phone lines in my house (the old tenant had two lines, but I only have one). One line tested good for 6 meg DSL and the other did not. Of course, which line did they put the phone and DSL on? The bad line. Unfortunately, AT&T has no motivation to fix anything, so I'm stuck with 3000/512 DSL, instead of 6000/768.

I had decided to put AT&T 6000/768 bare line DSL on the other line, but when I can have Extreme for a buck more a month, why bother? So, I went down to the cable office 2 miles away, picked up a modem and self install kit (both free), went home, hooked the modem up and was online 5 minutes later! Speeds are running 9700/980.

Update: 10/25/07. Things seem to be good now. My speeds have generally stabilized at 9600/950. I can live with this quite nicely, thank you.
I believe that Time Warner wants to improve, and that's a good thing. Right now, I have two choices: T.W. at $45.00 or Verizon 3000/768 dry line DSL at $35.00. I think the extra speed justifies the extra ten dollars a month. I might re-evaluate when the promo period expires and T.W. internet is 20 dollars a month more. The other thing is that I notice fiber being run on poles near the Verizon central office a mile away. Could this mean that FIOS will be here soon?

My wife is even satisfied with their cable and Internet services. The kids love the On Demand free kids channels. Even if I drop their Internet, I think I'll be keeping their cable.

UPDATE: 7/7/07 Things seem to be getting better. My download speed seems better, and the connection is staying on more reliably. My only complaint now is that my upstream speeds seem to have dropped from 1000 to about 600. Downstream speeds stay stable at around 9500.

So, on average, I'm getting 95% of the download I pay for, but only 60% of the upload. Still, I can live with this-Verizon DSL would only be around 2700 on downloads (though their uploads would probably be better-they claim 768K and usually are around 750K).

The improvement justifies raising the value up by a point....

Now let's hope they give me the 15000/2000 they've been promising for quite a while...

I'm told that Packet Shaping hasn't arrived here-yet.
When It does, I'm sure my rating on RR will be dropping again....

    ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I signed up for Road Runner Extreme. When I ordered, I was told that my area had been upgraded and I should expect 15,000/2000 speeds. First they cancelled the order, then when they finally came they screwed up the install which left my TV sets pixellating and my Internet going on and off. To their credit, they fixed that, but now I find that my speeds have NOT been upgraded (they are still 10,000/1000) and the service has lag and slows down big time at night.
Not only that, but their 'packet shaping' causes even 15 meg downloads to slow down to under 100K/sec (3000/768 DSL is over twice as fast as this-for 20 dollars a month!). This service shows great on speed tests, but fails miserably in real world usage (My Vonage even has breakups with it).

Last night I tried to stream a 128Kbps audio file and it kept breaking up. I did a speed test while the stream was going and got 4500/480. THEN I stopped the stream, did another test and got 9200/750. In other words, their packet shaping was slowing down the connection to less then HALF what I'm paying for.
Time Warner claims that their packet shaping only affects p2p. I say BULLS*#T! It affects ALL downloads and streaming. T.W. has designed their network to look GREAT on speed tests while giving no useful speed!

    Agreed!

I agree with you, at the moment, I'm trying to download the iPhone welcome video from Apple, its 173MB and downloading at 100KB/s max, and its zipped. As soon as it hits 100KB/s, it drops down to about 75KB/s then fluctuates from there. Where the hell is my 8Mbps? I pay for RR Premium in the Mid-Ohio region. I don't get anywhere near 8Mbps and can't stream a damn thing. I only decided to download this video because it wouldn't stream from Apple's site. I should be able to stream the large version with no problem, I could before they implemented this packet shaping BS.

I think you answered your own question.

Update: 10/25/07. "Things seem to be good now. My speeds have generally stabilized at 9600/950. I can live with this quite nicely, thank you."

"I notice fiber being run on poles near the Verizon central office a mile away. Could this mean that FIOS will be here soon?"

Hard to answer if FIOS will be available soon, but if you look at the second statement in relation to the first statement, I would be willing to bet FIOS is right around the corner, which is why your TW speeds have 'suddenly' stabilized.

I would also be willing to bet that if Verizon was laying Fiber in MY neighborhood, TW would make sure MY speeds would suddenly 'stabilize' as well.

Re: I think you answered your own question.

Ya never know... it could be TWC laying the fiber... maybe even to Verizon's office...

...or it could be unrelated to either companies services... it could be a 3rd parties fiber...
