I self installed Road Runner around 6 years ago. It worked for 48 hours and then was down for 2 weeks. It turns out the cable drop to my house had water damage so they ran a new line (although it took three visits for them to figure that out).
Ever since then Road runner has been rock solid. I cant remember any kind of outage since. I use VoIP service and it's better than a landline with road runner.
Speeds have been upgraded a few times since I first got it, I now get about 7.5mb down, 512kb up (with the original modem which I may upgrade). As much as I love RR though, I will be switching to fios when it becomes active in my area very soon.

I've upgraded to a docsis 2.0 modem (an RCA DCM425) and I'm now getting the full 10/512 speeds. Amazingly, I still haven't had an outage of any kind. The only negative is that the upload can't compete with fiber. I should note though that my speeds are consistent at all times of day.
