OK, I broke down and got Road Runner high speed cable internet. I had it before when it was Comcast, and after 2 and a half years with Comcast and outstanding service, Time Warner/Road Runner took over and within a month everything went into a fast downward spiral. I got rid of Road Runner at that point but kept my basic cable for TV. I subscribed to DSLExtreme for $12.95 a month and had a contract for a year with them that was supposed to be 12 months for $12.95 a month for a 1.5MB download 384K upload. First thing that went wrong with DSLExtreme was that I am right here by the CO (AT&T), its just at the end of the street is how close I am actually, but DSLExtreme has a contract with AT&T that they cannot offer higher speeds for me at this time, so I had to settle for what they had. It actually was not a bad deal, and the speed issue was not a huge deal either. I'm not a "speed freak" when it comes to an ISP. I just look for a reliable connection, one that will stay on and not have a lot of packet loss etc. My experience with DSLExtreme was good until 6 months into my contract they decided that they wanted to start charging me $29.95 for the same connection which didnt fly too well with me. I talked to several people at the company and they told me that I had ordered online and that was the deal being offered at the time, first 6 months $12.95 and after that it would go up to $29.95 for the remainder of my contract. Well I know better, I'm not that stupid, thats not the deal I signed up for in the beginning. DSLExtreme was not willing to budge or work with me in any way at all, so they are now history. I still had my basic cable with Time Warner so I was up there paying my bill at the main office and I picked up their high speed internet install kit. Comes in a nice little box with modem and cables etc and I came home and thought OK let me give this another try. Maybe just maybe after 6 months they will have their act together. So I hooked everything up like it was before, and called their tech support and "got in line" on their phone system because I have been down this road before. The wait was about 20 minutes of listening to "Muzak" and every 30 seconds this recorded voice popped in saying how important my call was etc etc and please keep waiting. Do they have any idea at all how completely annoying that is? So finally the guy comes on, I explain that I have just gotten my self install kit and got everything hooked up and I need to register my modem so I can start surfing. I give him the mac address and all that stuff and he starts saying "ok what lights are on the modem etc etc" so we cant seem to get the modem connected and so he does a trouble ticket and is going to get a higher tier to call me back. I thought oh noooooooo here we go again. Well so I hung up and waited a bit and then I noticed this little button on the front that says Internet On/Off which I didnt notice before. I hit and it and whala all the lights come on and its connected. You have to keep in mind I had a Motorola modem before and now I have an RCA which looks totally bizarre to me, but the lady at the main office said thats the one they are using now, so I just grabbed it and went on my merry way. Anyhow, It was all connected up so I turned on the computer and it just hit the ground running. I did a lot of speed tests to see what I was getting, I'm at 7MB/384K at the moment, which is perfect if it will just stay connected and I get no major packet loss like before. I signed up on 05/02/07 and its now today the 13th and I havent had any issues. (knocks on wood) The speeds have been very consistent and when the sun goes down it actually stays on! I am shocked I have to be honest because I was expecting it to go out at sundown and stay out all night and magically come back on in the morning when tech support came out, but so far so good. I guess the only gripes I have at this point is price. They offer a "lite" version 1.5MB/384K to people that have digital cable at a price of $19.95 a month, but I dont have digital cable and I dont want digital cable so I cant get the offer which really blows. I called the customer service department regarding this and the guy explained to me that they were trying to get people with digital cable to try out the high speed internet blah blah blah. I do wish they would offer it to everyone because I dont really have a use for such high speeds, I just do emails, chat on yahoo and msn, and surf the web and look things up, stuff like that. I have a friend that lives in San Antonio and she has Road Runner and has the "lite" version and doesnt have digital cable, so I wish they would do the same here. They might at some point if the demand is there for it I have been told. I am hoping that maybe the pricing will go down or something. I just think $44.95 is a lot for internet right now, with DSL being offered elsewhere at better deals. I may try Earthlink out, they have some great deals going at the moment too. Theres a lot to choose from in the Dallas area so I suggest you look around and see whats out there. I'm putting this in the mixed reviews because at this point my feelings are "mixed" regarding Road Runner cable. I wanna see how THEY perform this time around. I did notice the other day they were out here in these huge trucks with big spools of cable doing something up and down the streets, so I dont know if they are planning to rewire everything around here or what they are doing. God only knows. Hopefully this time around things will be good. I loved my internet when it was Comcast, I cant say enough good things about them when they were here in Dallas and was sorry to see them go. We will see what happens.

| Re: Simple explanation said by timpinson :Seems to be working ok so far. I just had such a bad experience with them when they switched from Comcast over to Time Warner. I think I got way spoiled by Comcast. I have several close friends that are in Iraq at the moment so a solid connection is very important to me. It's the only way I am able to communicate with them. Thanks for asking though I'm glad to hear that it's working for you okay now. I've had the exact opposite with Comcast. When they switched from Time Warner to Comcast, I had quite a few picture problems with my TV and my modem went wonky.
Instead of trying to explain it all here, I'll just post the link to my review and you can see for yourself.
I know what you mean about being spoiled. Before I moved here and for several months being here, I had their speed package for several months and got a constant 8.88 on the download. A little after that, I took my computer and for some long due repairs. When I got it back, I was finally on the Comcast network and capped at speed of 6.60, but was getting PB of 8.88 for several seconds.
I really miss that sustained speed of 8.88 and want it back badly. When I went to Comcast, they said the transition hadn't gone as smoothly as they hoped and that everyone was stuck at the normal speed of 6/384, with no other speed in sight. And that's just the beginning. Don't get me started on the lack of cable boxes. They've been out of them for weeks with no ETA on when they'll get more. So as of right now, I'm stuck with a malfunctioning Scientific-Atlanta 8300 when Comcast says they are going to switch every one of these out with a Motorola.
I don't think this is too good a service, do you? I'm thinking of dumping the DVR and saving $10 on a monthly cable bill until Comcast gets off their ass and get some working boxes in.
Good luck with your friends in Iraq. I hope they're safe.
