    My Other Reviews·AT&T Southwest
I was able to place the initial order, run out and pick up a modem, and have it activated and online in about 45 minutes--and this was after normal business hours.

I've been a longtime user of AT&T/SBC's DSL offerings. However, upon learning that TW's RoadRunner had bumped the highest package to 10/1, I had to try it. My speeds on AT&T's DSL 6/768 package averaged around 4900/600. I'm now getting 9400/950.

I think I'll run both services side-by-side for a while to make sure the cable is solid and consistent, but so far I am very impressed.

Update 10/22/07: I've been using the service for around 10 months now. It's fast--but only during parts of the day. During peak evening hours, I frequently only get half of my rated speeds. It's also considerably less reliable than my DSL was--in the last 10 months, I've had more outages or dialup-like speed periods than I had in 6 years with DSL. I wouldn't classify it as unreliable...it's usually up, and usually achieves good speeds--but I still have far more problems than I did with DSL. If it weren't for the fact that AT&T has yet to offer a product with comparable speed, I'd likely switch back.

Update 02/01/08: One year later, TW's top tier moved from 10/1 to 15/1. I have two subscriptions, for an aggregate 30/2. During the morning hours I might see 22-25mbit of that, but in the evening, I'll see anywhere from 4mbit to 15mbit, generally somewhere around 10. (yes, I am doing something that can utilize both connections). Since my node is so obviously saturated, I'm likely going to cancel one of the subscriptions and replace it with...something. I like the U-Verse 10/1.5 offering, but the interleaved profile, lack of static IPs, and 1 HD stream limitation makes me think twice. ADSL's 6/768 tier just feels so ancient in 2008.

    RR here today, gone tomorrow

I left SBC DSL (nearly $65/mo) after three years to take advantage of a lower monthly cost during the $29.95 promo at RR. Provisioning was quick and painless. However, when the 6 month promo was up, so was my bill. Why they upped the price to $45/mo I do not understand. They do not provide the service to accompany it and you still end up an hour on hold to reach customer service. I couldn't reach them to negotiate a reduced price.

The "new" AT&T came out with a counter offer of $15/mo in January '07... guess what? I switched back to DSL. Interestingly, I note no significant speed differential, but I certainly do note the drop in cost!! At one-third the price of cable, dsl is by far the best bargain. The only catch is that AT&T has that disgusting one year contract (but at least the monthly price is locked in). RR is not worth the no-contract price at 3 times the monthly cost of AT&T.

Re: RR here today, gone tomorrow

Since writing the review, I've added a second cable subscription (so now two subs at 10/1) and ditched the AT&T line and DSL completely. My configuration is such that I'm able to utilize two lines effectively.

Cost is a secondary (but not inconsequential) consideration for me. What's funny, however, is that I'm actually saving money...$40 for the first subscription and $55 for the second totalling $95/mo. I was paying $135/mo for my phone line and 6/768 static DSL package. I'm getting 4x the effective speed for $40/mo less.

I want speed first, and AT&T just refuses to offer it--even in their next generation Lightspeed/VDSL2 deployment areas. When and if AT&T offers a line that is competitive, I'd be more than happy to switch back. My concern is that I think we're probably about 8-14 months away from that in this area, and I just couldn't wait that long.
