On January 31st 2004, I received the Roadrunner 3Mb Down and 384Kb up service when I got my cable installed. I received a Motorola SurfBoard 5100 Cable modem for use with the service. The quoted price was 44.95 a month, and when bundled with cable came out to be $88 a month. They had to call in three techs in the end to get it working, but, it worked out in the end. Since I had the service installed, I've had very little down time, and only one major outage.

Before I got Roadrunner, I suffered what most people who are unable to afford broadband have to suffer through: Dial-up. My dial-up service got really bad. It got to where I couldn't see pictures and web pages only loaded halfway. It also took months for me to download large files. All of that changed when I got Roadrunner.

The speed is incredible, I consistently get 2627 through 2801 Down speed and 350 Up speed, though this isn't really a problem, as I don't upload things often.

Knowing what I know now, I will never go back to dial-up.

When bundled with cable, Roadrunner is the best bang for my buck. I highly recommend this to anyone. If Time Warner Cable keeps the service the way it is in my area or makes it better and faster, they will always have me as our customer.

    UPDATE: 9/3/2004

I received Roadrunner Premium today, and what a fiasco that was. On 9/2/04 I went to my local Time Warner Cable office and asked if they finally had the Roadrunner package I had heard so much about on-line. After about three weeks of nothing, they finally told me they had it.

After getting over my excitement, I told the woman who took my order, I wanted to get hooked up with it as soon as possible. In an effort to save a few dollars, I was told previously that if I ordered digital cable with the new Roadrunner package it would knock $10 off my bill, that was a big false, it was more like add money to my bill. My bill would have been $150. That was way too much. When I went to check on the Roadrunner premium for the first time, I was quoted a total bill of about $113.64. In the end, that's what I went with. That's whole lot less than $150.

To add another little problem to this fiasco, the woman who took my order the first time told me I was the first one to ask for this package in my area. Needless to say, she didn't have her stuff together. After telling me she could hook me up with what I wanted along with digital cable, it would be a wait of about eight days before my speed would kick in. That's a load of crap, when all you have to do is flip a switch and wait about five minutes.

I walked out of the local office disappointed and furious, both at the amount of the bill and the wait time. I went home and cooled off for a few hours, then I remembered a paper the same woman gave me three weeks previous. It quoted $113.64 instead of $150. Since it was already after closing time, I decided to call tomorrow.

I called the next day and got a very nice woman, who was explained the situation, put me on hold twice (not for very long, thank God), came back and said "you'll have the speed in about five minutes."

10 minutes later, I do a speed test here and find it's all good. That's the way service should be.

In all, my final bill is $115.82 and a lot more acceptable on my wallet.

With Roadrunner Premium I average 5287 down and 470 up, on most of my speed tests.

    Update: 9/29/04

    The fiasco continues...

I just got my cable bill in and they got it wrong. It was supposed to be 113.64, and the amount on the bill is 136.14. It looks like they charged me twice for RR. That's not right. I'm gonna call and get this straightened out tomorrow.

    I'll update this afterward.

    Update: 11/1/04

I got my next cable bill in. The 136.14 was right for THAT bill. Now, i get the next bill in and it's 115.82. It's 2 dollars higher then 113.64, but I'm not complaining about this. Now, if i just could get my VoIP service to work....

    Update: 11/20/04

On 11/16/04 I went to my local Time Warner cable office to see about getting a DVR. After making sure that the DVR would be compatible with my current TV package, I put in an order. Four days later, the installer showed up at my door promptly at 8 a.m. he was punctual, I'll give him that. Once he got the DVR out of the package. We spotted our first problem. We would have to move my setup around for ventilation and pointing purposes. After getting that problem worked out, he hooked up the box and began programming it. About 10 minutes later, the box was hooked up, programmed, and ready to rock 'n roll.

I haven't missed a single one of my shows since. I highly recommend this.

    Update: 1/03/05

On 11/29/04, I started having problems with my speed. I'm on RoadRunner Premium's 6000/512 package, and I used to get 5585/460. Now, I barely get 4000/430. Today, I went to my local Time Warner Cable office, and requested a credit for the time my speeds were lower. (This problem is still going on, btw.) I encountered the same woman who didn't know what she was doing when she sold me the RoadRunner Premium package. She wouldn't get me the credit i asked for until they sent a tech out to check my lines, some good did come out of this, as he replaced some sort of connector. Though, it still didn't do anything to fix my speed problem. He reset my VoIP terminal/modem, also to no avail.

To sum it up, I've got to do this again tomorrow, probably call in another tech to do absolutely nothing, since the problem is on their end, (as is evident by the RR Network page) and not mine.

If I don't get the credit i'm looking for, I'm going to be very upset.

    Update: 01/05/05

I got the credit i was looking for, but they still insisted on still sending ANOTHER tech out to check my lines/equipment. Some good did come out of this, as the second tech that showed up was the same one that helped with my RR install last year. He really knew his stuff and I thank him profusely for what he did for me before and now.

We narrowed it to a possible problem with my VoIP equipment causing me to have lower speed, but i still have my doubts, since i got higher speed before (5585/460-70 on 6000/512) WITH the box connected. I'm going to wait until the RR Network page clears up and see if that helps, before calling in anybody else. Other than that, I'd guess that it might be a problem with my VoIP equipment as the tech suggested.

Thank you for all your help Devin! (He was the second tech.)

    Update: 1/31/05

Today marks the one year anniversary of my getting on the RoadRunner Cable internet bandwagon. Aside from slightly slower speeds lately (presumed to be a by product of an upcoming speed upgrade. My area has been RED since 11/29/04 and the network page is inaccessable right now.) everything has been great this past year. I've been able to do things and see things on here in seconds that my old MSN Dial Up connection would've choked on or took months to do.

It's been a GREAT year BroadBand wise for me. Having Cable has also allowed me to dump BellSouth and jump to VoIP, which is just as good, if not better than my BellSouth line.

I have recommended RoadRunner to all my friends and those that could have ate it up. Their world will never be the same.

To anybody who reads this, if you don't have high speed access, and can get RoadRunner, GET IT! It's well worth it.

    Update: 2/7/05

I got my next cable bill in and i don't see the credits they said they added to the bill. Time to raise a little hell at my local Time Warner Cable office.

I will update this as things come.

    Update: 3/10/05

Just shortly after a year of of have RoadRunner Cable internet, I have taken the Online gaming plunge and experienced a great response with most of the online capable games i have, with only one experiening a hand full of lag

    Update: 4/5/05

I had a teck come out again. It seems that i'm paying for 8000/512 and only getting 4000 out of that 8000. He said it seems to be my computer, because the laptop he uses showed perfect speed.

I'll be getting a new computer in about 3 months anyway, so eh... I'm not as satisfied as I was when I was getting the 6000/512 package and it actually worked the way it was supposed too at 5585/460 out of 6000/512.

    Update: 4/13/05

After about 8 1/2 months of having RoadRunner Premium service, it degraded on 11/29/04. Since that time, having the premium service just wasn't worth it. Therefore, as of today, I've switched back to the standard service and am saving 25 bucks a month.

    Update: 7/8/05

I moved recently and got wired today. He wouldn't run seperate lines (he said it was because it's an apartment. I'm gonna ask around and see if he was lying because he just didn't want to do the work. In the end, It'll be my cable signals that make my decision. ) even though we got permission beforehand. Instead, he used a old cable that he had to strip and repair because It was causing the signal to drop into the dead hills. He spliced the one line into 3 to give me what I wanted device wise. (I'm against splicing because I heard it warps your signals if done too many times.)

After getting the signal acceptable, he hooked up the modem and left me to do router and other things. After about 15 or so minutes of problems, I got everything to play nice and aren't really having any problems...yet.

Overall, I'm satisfied with the service, but would've been happier if he ran the lines like I requested instead of splicing the one line.

    Update: 1/02/06

I got a new computer yesterday, after five years. The speeds have gone off the chart and I'm getting a much better sustained download rate.

In a few days, I'm calling Time Warner and having them run another line for the DVR I have in my computer.

    Update: 1/31/06

Today marks the two year date that I've been on Cable. Aside from some minor problems with it, service has been flawless. The new computer I've received is also great, minus a small problem.

    Update: 2/21/06

On Tuesday the 21st, I went and exchanged the DVR I had for a new DVR since it went bad. Only one problem since getting it. I'll watch it a lil while longer to see if it happens again.

    Update: 10/27/06

I'm officially in my new house. It's been a hell of a ride with Road Runner, but Comcast has recently took over my area's Time Warner Cable so any further updates will be in my Comcast review: »Review of Comcast by Chris 313

Thank you for the great service these past two years, Time Warner Cable!

    roadrunner premium is a joke

With the premium i was getting about 4687 consistently.

without it on the regular plan i'm getting ~4350.

$25 a month difference. The upload was also closer to 384 than 512, averaging about 400.

I used the service for a day , not even, about 20 hrs befor ei called and told them to put me back on the regular plan.

It's very obvious that TWC in NY is overselling bandwidth ith their "premium plans" from any of the offered providers.

~5% more speed for ~60% more money is not a deal.

add to that my cable has ben flaky for damn near a month. I'm done.. waiting for a speakeasy 6/768 install now.
