I have had RoadRunner cable service (both TV and broadband) since 1999. In general, the internet access has been reliable and smooth without any major hiccups. Outages have been rare for me, and I generally see consistent performance without major performance hits. I was initially concerned about potentially hitting some bottlenecks at certain times of day, considering I lived in a college area when I first got the service. I found that this was not the case. When I moved across town, I kept my account and just dragged their cable modem with me. The connection was reestablished the day I moved in and has worked trouble-free for me since. I'm not a huge bandwidth user (some occasional movie promos, software packages etc are the largest data blocks I move), so I cannot judge its performance under heavy traffic conditions. However, I can say that it works exactly as I want it to with no major problems to speak of.

My one complaint is that the price is high for what is delivered. I'd consider a lower bandwidth package for a cheaper price, since $40+/mo. is expensive for the amount I use it. The reliability of the connection is what keeps me using it even at this price though.

    Feb. 6 2006 update:

Still in same location. Connection still very solid and doing everything I want it to do. A good, reliable option in San Diego.

    Dec. 18 2006 update:

Still same location. Nominal speed of 5/512, clocks in at somewhere around 4.5/350 on an average day, which is good enough for my purposes. Of course, some more upload bandwidth would be nice, but not being a heavy user of upstream capacity I have no real incentive to pay for it. I have the digital cable/RR bundle for $90. With my DVR and fees, the monthly bill comes to $102. I'd still consider a lower tier for less money given my usage patterns, but have not considered jumping to another provider because the connection reliability has been high.
