I was with Verizon with a meager 768/128 dryloop line (at the time that was the fastest service they could offer me) for $24/month ($28 after my commitment expired). Once my 12 month contract was up, I checked to see if a faster speed was available - double the speed was available but at nearly double the price. I looked into DSL Extreme and was pleased to see that for $24/month, $4 less than what I was paying Verizon, I could double my speed to 1500/384. I could have gone faster for a little more but I'm already doubling what I'm used to. The price was also much lower than Earthlink, who's website was never able to give me a consistent price or speed.
The online ordering process went smooth. About 5 days later I received my activation date and the next day, my D-link modem arrived via UPS, along with a quick install guide, install CD, and filters.
Service was ready the day before the promised activation date. The documentation never mentioned where to enter my login info for the PPPoE connection, once I had to figure that out on my own, I was in... I added my Vonage TA device and my Netgear wireless router with no problems.
DSL Extreme took care of canceling my previous service with Verizon. I was a bit surprised to see that Verizon cut off my e-mail access immediately, I'm so glad that I didn't have anything important that I lost. I called Verizon the day after activation and confirmed that there was nothing more I needed to do and that the modem was mine to keep (swell!)
The speed is very close to what was advertised and the QOS is quite good - which is nice because I always had a strong, consistent connection with Verizon.
The modem was free with a 12 month commitment, I paid only the shipping charge.
