I signed up on July 18th. After trying to convince SBC to give me lower monthly payments for the same speed, they denied such request and only said it is applicable for new customers. I threaten to leave them if I would not get the same, cheaper price as newer customers. They did not want to do anything about it. Since our service contract was ending, i was recommended www.dslextreme.com Went there, quickly signed up.
I then went here to read up some reviews and discouraged because most of them seem like customers had problems. I kep my fingers crossed.
July 24 was the activation date. The normal Internet was down and did not start up automatically. I got in the mail a day before a CD that would supposely install the service. That did not work. The line died at 4am, I I called the DSL tech support at noon which helped me resolve the issue. I ran my LAN through a server, so had to login there and change PPoE to DHCP, which was generally explained by the tech and the service is up. So basically really fast switch/downtime as promised.
The problem was there was no manual which i could find on their website which addressed such issue. I kept my Speedstream modem from SBC.
I signed up for 3mbps down but after checking here i only managed to get 1,644mbps which is dissappointing. My SBC company center is literally across the fence, so i am not sure what is the problem. With SBC i would start my download at 500Kbytes down and it would slow down to 150kbytes (i had the slower plan) So i am confident i can reach the promised 3mpbs.
update August 16th -Service seems to be stable, I still do not get my hopeful 3mbps but compared to my old 150Kilobytes i know top out at around 220kilobytes, so thats good. The only problem/concern so far is how they are charging me, i emailed them my question, but I never got a response, 3 days after. I do not want to call them yet, since reading other reviews, it takes just an hour to get in touch with a person.
-Besides that, everything seems to run smooth, i like the DHCP.
Update December 29, 2006 The service seems to turn off at random times. This does not happen often, but when it does, it happens 2-3 times a day. The maximum reachable speed is about 200Kilobytes per second (1.8mbps) not really close to maximum potential of 3mpbs. I had some interesting stuff with the billing, they do it weird and threw me off at first, but it was explained to me afterwards. Overall, works alright, speeds are consistent (not fast), and down time is minimum but still happens.
Update June 29, 2008 Signed up for 6mpbs/768kbits service at 34.95 monthly to monthly as thats what I was paying for my current 3mbits/512kbits line.
So I had service for 2+ years. No huge problems. Just service went out here and there for couple of hours at a time, nothing i can't deal with. I do not use webmail or webpages, so i can't comment on that. The customer service is ok I guess, I never really had to deal with them except for latest occasion of over charging me, which was resolved very quickly. As mentioned earlier in my review, my speeds are never close to the 3mpbs promised. I hope with this upgrade to 6mpbs I will be able to see full potential. If then, I might bother them for a while and if no solution, look into my primary provider, ATT/SBC.
Update July 2nd, 2008 New service in place and i am liking it. I tested speed and it was 5.1mbps/600kbps as promised. No real downtime, just over night.
