    My Other Reviews·AT&T U-Verse
    *** UPDATE 12/28/2007 ***

I cancelled my EL service on 11/4/2007 - exactly one year from my account's, "member since", date. Of course, even though I had talked with an EL rep' a couple weeks earlier told me I would have fulfilled my contract, they tried to tell me that I was going to have to pay an early cancellation fee. Apparently since it took them a month to get my service working back in 2006, they were trying to tell me that my 12 month commitment didn't start until the the service was stable. I complained, telling them that I had been asured by the prior rep' that I had met the commitment and, after a long time on hold, was appologized to and the fee waived as well as a pro-rated refund for the portion of November that I had already paid for.

The refund came and I was a happy camper now on AT&T Uverse VDSL - blissfully surfing away, assuming my EL headaches were long gone. My mistake.

Mid-December I get a new charge to my credit card of $162.31 ($150 + tax) from EarthLink for "Early Termination". (Insert picture of steam shooting from my ears here)

After 30 min's of failed attempts to find a live person by phone - I relented and used the stupid chat support system and had the same argument with this guy. After another half hour or so they agreed to refund the fee and, sure enough, a couple days later it showed up on my credit card account.

Since leaving them, I've been very happy with AT&T's UVerse VDSL internet connection and customer support, (their DVR, not so much), see my profile's UVerse review for that info.

    *** END 12/28/2007 UPDATE ***

Oh, how I rue the day I left the blissful, calm and predictable waters that were Speakeasy DSL. Earthlink DSL loses sync multiple times a day, the voice service is okay when it works, but has random dropouts for no apparent reason. The worst part is that there is nobody who speaks English or that gives a rat's behind if my service sucks or not. As soon as I can jump this sinking ship, I'll be back at Speakeasy. Saving a few bucks is simply not worth it.

I'm supposed to have (and was pre-qualified for) the 8Mb/1Mb service with line-powered voice bundle. I had to be capped at 6Mb/768Kb because of my line quality and they never would have anyone come out to check my copper pair. I had a new Covad pair run to the house by Speakeasy a year prior for their OneLink service but Earthlink is using the older, SBC pair and they wanted me to pay $50 to get it switched to the new pair.

It also took almost a month to get my service stable after cutting over.

Earthlink also used to have 2nd/3rd tier tech support reps here on DSLReports forums but they've laid them all off and off-shored the jobs with no support here any more. They were the only support that actually ever helped me.

    Come December, I'm bailing.

Is it possible to cancel the contract if you rarely get decent service? By the way, you are right, tech support could care less if they fix your problem or not. In my case they never figure out whats wrong and give me a different excuse each time. They even accused my of having a computer virus screwing my connection up. Did virus and all types of ware checks, nothing was found. Why dont they admit that they suck and let me cancel my contract for free if they cant give me internet connection.

    Just a Question

I had a new Covad pair run to the house by Speakeasy a year prior for their OneLink service but Earthlink is using the older, SBC pair and they wanted me to pay $50 to get it switched to the new pair.
Are you referring to wiring installed in your home or the SBC outside plant wiring?

Is there a reason you have a preference for the SBC wiring?

    Re: Just a Question

I'm talking about the wire from the curb to my NID.

I'm saying that I wish they would try the one that Speakeasy/Covad put it for my old Speakeasy OneLink line as it never had any noise problems. The SBC pair I'm on now dates back many years to when I was still on Southwestern Bell/SBC for voice. (Actually, there's a 3rd cat-5 out there from Sprint ION too, but it's been dead since they went belly-up)
