Here in Los Alamos, Earthlink apparently buys bandwidth from the Qwest telco infrastructure and resells the service. Download speed is consistently about 100 kbits per second, barely faster than dial up. Their tech support is useless. They have no direct access to the network, cannot ping your modem, have no idea what kind of latency issues there may be, and will not even tell you what bandwidth you are supposed to approximately be getting. Told them we used Speakeasy speed test and others. They are so scripted as to be insulting. Best they could suggest was to clear out temporary internet files. Overall very poor service. The next-door neighbor uses Qwest DSL (Qwest apparently didn't initially sell DSL service directly, so this household went with EL, but now one can buy directly from Qwest), and neighbor doesn't have the problem. In other words, acceptable speeds despite same physical distance. Conjecture is that Earthlink is splitting limited bandwidth among too many customers and we are being choked. Avoid.
